Mohammed Shami made a thrilling cameo dragging Bengal to the quarter-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy after a win by three runs against Chandigarh.
He picked 4/30 to restrict Chandigarh to 156 for 9 in pursuit of 160. With 11 runs needed in the last over, Saya nailed his yorkers and picked up the key wicket of Nikhil Sharma while Jagjit Singh was run out, as he conceded only seven runs.
Bengal were pegged back early on with quick wickets as they were reeling at 21 for 3 in the powerplay and further fell to 114 for 8 in the 16th over.
Mohammed Shami played a cameo of 32 runs in 17 balls including three fours and two sixes while his partner Pradipta Pramanik scored 30 off 24 deliveries. His assault at the final stages of the match took Bengal to a competitive 159 for 9.
Shami then struck with his ball to dismiss Arslan Khan as the cover point fielder took a catch. Sayan Ghosh and Shahbaz Ahmed continued to chip away at regular intervals to have chasing side down at 56 for 4 to put Bengal marginally ahead.
A 45 runstand in five overs between Raj Bawa (32) and Pradeep Yadav (27) meant that Chandigarh were not down and out yet.
Sayan returned to dismiss Bawa while Kanishk Seth bagged the wicket of Pradeep yadav. Meanwhile, Shami has been working with NCA staff as he continues to top-flight cricket.
On Sunday, India captain Rohit Sharma remained cautious over Shami’s availability while insisting the ‘doors were open’ for his return.
Shami has responded to his bowling workload and intensity all tournament. Shami opted to rest on match-eve, a decision which is believed to have been his own to preserve himself for the duration of the competition.
Bengal will play their next match Baroda on December 28 at Gymkhana Ground.

South Africa has surged to the top of the WTC points table after a 109-run victory against Sri Lanka in the second test at Gqeberha. The win also sees a clean sweep 2-0 victory for Proteas.
With this win, South Africa has 63.33 percentage points, surpassing Australia which has 60.71. Notably, Australia had claimed the spot just a day earlier after a 10-wicket victory against India in the Pink-ball test of the Border Gavaksar Trophy.
India currently occupies the third position with 57.29 percentage points while Sri Lanka sit fourth with 4.45 percentage points.
After their win, South Africa’s hopes of making to the WTC finals at Lord’s in June next year hinge on their performance in the remaining two home fixtures against Pakistan.
Australia’s reign at the top of the #WTC25 standings was short-lived as new leaders emerge after South Africa’s whitewash of Sri Lanka 👀 #SAvSL | Details 👇
In the second test, spinner Keshav Maharaj was instrumental in South Africa’s victory, claiming five wickets on the final day. Maharaj’s figures of 5/76 helped dismiss Sri Lanka for 238,as the proteas took only 70 minutes to pick 5 remaining wickets.
The match was a thriller with both teams needing a win a stay in contention for a spot in the WTC final. However, South Africa’s clinical display ensured their dominance and kept their dream of competing in the Lord’s final alive.
Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada made short work of it and wrapped up the proceedings in an hour to complete a magnificent win by 109 runs in the second test and series win also.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has reduced their PCT to 45.45 and even if they win both their remaining against Australia at home in January-February, their PCT will only get to 53.84 which might not be enough for them to make it throught as they will have to depend upnon several other results for a place in the summit clash.
The focus will now solely be on the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy with India and Australia both alive in the qualification race.

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Australian batter Travis Head are likely to face disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their heated exchange during the second test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The duo are found guilty of breaching the ICC’s code of conduct. However, clean records from the past might avoid their suspension.
Tension were high in the second test which reflected during a heated exchange between Siraj and Travis Head after the latter’s dismissal. The Indian ace bowler dismissed Head after cleaning him up on 140.
As Head walked back to the pavilion, the pair exchanged words in the middle. The home crowd in Adelaide stood firmly behind the local hero and booed Siraj relentlessly after the incident.
The Indian pacer was moved to the inner field to avoid further provocation. Head expressed disappointment after the incident mentioning he has only said ‘well bowled’. However, both the players hugged it out after the match and made things normal.
Siraj was also involved in another altercation with Marnus Labuschagne as he threw the ball at the batter in frustration after the play was stopped due to a ‘beer snake’ distraction in the crowd.
Head was named as the Player of the Match. During the post match conference, “Sweet with it. He came out and just said [it was] a little bit of a misunderstanding … I think we will move on. We’ve had a great week, so let’s not let it ruin it,” said Head.
“It was fine. He said, ‘Why’d you swear?’ I sort of said, ‘Look, I didn’t at first. [but] I definitely swore at you the second time round,'” said Head.
Australia secured a 10 wicket victory during the pink-ball test and levelled 1-1 series and the third test of the series will begin on December 14 at The Gabba.

The BBL playoffs will be similar to the grand Indian Premier League, with a little addition. The tournament allows the fifth team on the Big Bash League standings to participate in the knockout stages as well.
The Eliminator will see the fourth and fifth-placed teams fight it out. There will be two Qualifiers which will see the first two teams try to get to the final quickly.
The second one will see the third-placed team play the winner of the Eliminator. It will be followed by the ‘Challenger’ which will see the loser of the Qualifier play against the winner of the second Qualifier to find a place in the Final.
Therefore, the primary aim of all teams will be to find a place in the top 5 of the Big Bash points table and get a place in the playoffs.
The Eliminator (Elimination Final)- Fourth v Fifth
The Qualifier (Second Semi-Final)- First v Second
The Knock-Out (First Semi-Final)- Third v Winner of The Eliminator
The Challenger (Preliminary Final)- Loser of The Qualifier v Winner of The Knock-Out
The Final (Grand Final)- Winner of The Qualifier v Winner of The Challenger

This remarkable achievement is a reflection of his unwavering passion for cricket and…
His appointment is being celebrated across Assam with many hailing it as a testament to his contributions to cricket administration and the recognition of Assam’s growing role in Indian cricket.
“The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases.
“Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb,” Binny wrote to Saikia.
It is understood that Saikia will continue in this role till September next year before appointing the full time secretary.
ACA president Taranga Gogoi, secretary Tridib Konwar and all members of the Apex Council expressed their elation at this remarkable milestone.
“His elevation to this prestigious position is a proud moment not only for Assam but also for the cricketing fraternity of the Northeast,” they stated.
The Guwahati Sports Association also hailed Saikia’s elevation in cricket administration. A special ceremony was organised at the GSA office, where President Paresh Chandra Das and other office bearers gathered to honor Saikia.

With reports suggesting the return of Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood for the third test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the 33-year-old has said that his availability will be determined ‘how he pulls up in 24 hours’ for the selection.
Hazlewood suffered a side strain injury during the first test and has been ruled out for the second test against India. After suffering a 1-0 defeat, Australia levelled the series after a 10-wicket victory at Adelaide.
With speculations raised on the availability of his potential return for the third tests, Hazlewood said, “I think it’ll be how I pull up in the 24 hours following it really.”
“Obviously two spells makes a big difference. Cooling down pretty much fully and then going again in the same day, and the intensity has got to be right up there as well.
“So a few boxes to tick, but it’s probably the 24 hours that follow and pulling up again the next day and then thinking ‘yeah, I’d be right to go again if I had to’.”
Hazlewood has been laid low by a series of fitness concerns in the recent past between december 2021 and June 2023, he featured in just four tests for Australia.
The fast bowler opined that the current injury felt different and that he could have pushed to play in Adelaide.
“It’s not necessarily your typical side strain, which I’ve had a couple in my career,” he said.
“It’s caused me a lot of trouble over the last few years, but perfect prep this year [coming into the Perth Test]. “I played the Shield game and ticked all that off and I was very happy where I was and it still happened, so I was pretty annoyed for a few days.
“If this [Adelaide Test] was the last Test of the summer, I could have potentially run the gauntlet and played. I think I would have been in a pretty bad state by the end of the game, even though it was only a short game but it just wasn’t quite right.”
“I’m very well aware of the area, and how the feelings are and what sort of pain it is, and how I can get through sessions, and what that means. I guess that makes my decisions a little bit easier, and I know what I can get through and what I can’t and if I’m ready or not. That experience is positive in this regard.”
Josh Hazlewood was the pick of Australia’s bowlers in the defeat in Perth and his absence in Adelaide has made way for Scott Boland to make his case and victorian grabbed his chance by returning match figures 5/105.
However, After a win, Australia reclaimed their top position in WTC points table. The third game of Australia-India tests will begin on December 14 at The Gabba.
Former Australia captain Tim Paine has lauded Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney’s performance in the Pink-ball test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, in which the hosts secured a 10-wicket victory at Adelaide.
The hosts levelled the series 1-1 after the win in the Pink-ball test where Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney had a decent performance which helped the side to secure a win in a match.
“We spoke a couple of days ago about the pressure that was on them and the response that people were wanting to see. This is a harshly treated team at times, but they are one of the great teams,” Paine said.
Paine has praised the hosts, stating that the way they responded under pressure was huge. He particularly mentioned the likes of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.
“The big boys stood up I thought particularly the captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc – the pink ball wizard, Travis Head was amazing and Marnus I thought was really pleasing,” he stated.
Paine also described the last session of play on the opening day as Test cricket at it absolute best.
“You’ve got one of our absolute champions who’s averaged 60 plus at times fighting to save his career and you’ve got a kid in his second Test trying to establish himself.”
Paine added that seeing good players fighting so desperately is a good thing to witness in professional sports.
“For Marnus and Nathan McSweeney at different points of their career to be able to nail down get through … that just put Australia so far out in front of that Test match,” he said.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Josh Hazlewood has fastened his recovery and is expected to return for third test. After suffering a 295-run defeat at Perth, Australia secured a stunning 10 wicket victory at Adelaide to reclaim their top spot in WTC points table.
The third test of the Australia-India tests will begin on December 14 at The Gabba.

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood would likely return to third tests after missing the Pink-ball test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy due to a side strain injury.
With Hazlewood set to return, Scott Boland has to make way in the playing 11 for the third test. Josh Hazlewood has an impressive record at the Gabba, Brisbane and his return could significantly boost Australia’s pace attack.
Josh Hazlewood has a faster recovery than expected and was seen bowling at full speed at the Adelaide Oval.
Josh Hazlewood bowled two spells on monday and seemed to be comfortable with his workload.
Australia has levelled the series 1-1 after a stunning 10 wicket victory in the pink-ball test and reclaimed their spot in the WTC points table.
Earlier, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had said that even though Scott Boland bowled well in Adelaide, he would still prefer Josh Hazlewood in the playing 11.
An injury update on Josh Hazlewood has just come in #AUSvIND
“Even though Boland has bowled brilliantly, I would still prefer Hazlewood in the playing XI for Brisbane,” said Ponting.
Hazlewood has played 8 tests in Brisbane so far, taking 37 wickets at an impressive average of 23.75. He has taken two wicket haul at the Gabba.
It is important to state that it was Hazlewood who got the better of Virat Kohli in the first innings of the Perth Test. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both struggling with their form, Hazlewood’s return could act as a potential dagger.
After a win in Adelaide, Australia Pat Cummins provided an update on Hazlewood saying the pacer will be ‘alright’ for Brisbane.
“(Josh Hazlewood) will have to bowl tomorrow, so he’s all on track. He will bowl tomorrow and then we will have to assess from there. But yeah, it’s all gone to plan so far,” said Cummins at the post-match press conference.
“So we are fairly confident that he will be alright for Brisbane, and we’ll know more in the next couple of days. Yeah if someone has to make way, that’ll be pretty unlucky,” he added.
Scott Boland did the job for Australia in Adelaide as he scalped a total of five wickets in the Test. The third test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will begin on December 14 at The Gabba.
