The Indian cricket team was fined 20 percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against West Indies in the first ODI match in Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

India Fined 20 Percent of Match fee in First ODI Match

ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees – Richie Richardson imposed the sanction after India was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

India played their first ODI match under Shikhar Dhawan on July 22 where team India won the match by 3 runs.

In the first ODI match, after winning the toss West Indies decides to bowl first. In the absence of star openers, Dhawan along with Shubman Gill opened the inning and laid a strong foundation by scoring 119 runs for the first wicket.

Shikhar Dhawan who poses threat to the bowling team loses his wicket while scoring 97 runs. Following his dismissal, with Shreyas Iyer‘s 54 runs team India crossed 300 run mark and scored 308 runs with a boundary of the last delivery from Shardul Thakur.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

India captain Shikhar Dhawan plead guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid leveled the charge.

West Indies on the other hand gave nightmares to the Indian bowlers and leads the team to a situation where the Windies were in need of 15 runs off the last over.

Siraj puts all his experience and restricts Shepherd from hitting high. India registered their first ODI victory of the series by 3 run margin. Indian captain and the player to score the most runs in the match has been named as the player of the match.

India sealed the series victory by defeating West Indies in the 2nd ODI match by 2 wickets. The last and final ODI match will be played on July 27 in Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
