Uncertainity Over BCCI Presidency Looms as Roger Binny Turns 70

Roger Binny’s future as BCCI president remains uncertain as the current office bearer turned 70 on July 19.

According to the Supreme Court-approved constitution, 70 is the maximum age limit for holding any post in the BCCI. On this occasion, there is a question over his capacity to continue to hold the office, due to the age limit.

According to the BCCI constitution (Page no 30), no office-bearer shall hold office after he has attained the age of 70 years. Thus, Binny would be disqualified from office, and the current vice-president, Rajeev Shukla, would take over the role.

However, according to a source close to former India all-rounder and World Cup winner Roger Binny, he can continue his role until the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, without the need for any official signatures or documentation.

Another concerning factor, the impending Sports Governance Bill, which is expected to be introduced and passed in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which removes the strict age limit of 70 years from the current BCCI constitution, allowing the office bearers of national sports federation to serve until the age of 75.

It’s expected that Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will be presenting the bill, which is said to ‘Override the constitutions of all nationals sports federations.’

BCCI has not provided any official statement on this matter yet. With top officials in Singapore for the recently concluded ICC Annual conference, they did not gave any comment.

However, a source familiar with the matter said that clarity is expected in the coming days.

Binny has not made any comment yet as he was in London to witness the Lord’s Test and when the Test ended, he went back to Bengaluru and then left for a holiday in Thailand to celebrate his birthday.

Currently Roger Binny is on Island near Thailand with his family, his daughters, and grandchildren who arrived from Australia.
