The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a bold move, making Shubman Gill the new ODI captain ahead of India’s tour of Australia, with Shreyas Iyer named as vice captain.

The BCCI went on to confirm their decision during the India squad announcement on October 04 for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.

On the other hand, some well-known players like Hardik Pandya, recovering from a quadriceps injury and Rishabh Pant, recovering from a foot injury, are unavailable for the tour.

“He won’t be fit for the Australia series due to the injury he picked up ahead of the final. He will undergo rehab at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) and only then will we know,” chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, said.

The duo has been preparing for the upcoming tour after a seven-month hiatus from international cricket.

With Virat Kohli making a century against Pakistan and a valuable knock against Australia in the semi finals of the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma went on to made a match winning contribution in the finals against New Zealand.
