Mohammed Shami has called the International Cricket Council (ICC) to lift the ban on using saliva on the cricket ball.
He has commented on the absence of reverse swing to the governing body to revisit the rules and allow bowlers to shine the ball with saliva.
He has voiced his concerns over this restriction after India’s win over Australia in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025.
“We are trying to reverse, but you are not getting the use of saliva into the game. We are constantly appealing to allow the use of saliva, and it will be interesting with the reverse swing,” stated Shami.
In ODIs, the art of reverse swin is almost extinct, with the introduction of two new balls already making it difficult for pacer before the saliva ban.

Mohammed Shami responsibilities have only increased in the tournament with the absence of Jasprit Bumrah due to injury. Shami was among the only two in India’s pace attack, with Hardik Pandya being the other pacer.
“I am trying to get my rhythm back and contribute more to the team. It is a responsibility when there are no two proper pacers, and I have to shoulder more responsibility,” Shami acknowledged.
He has been leading the pace attack sharing the new ball with Harshit Rana or Hardik Pandya.
Mohammed Shami has bought eight wickets to his name in the tournament so far, Shami has been at the forefront of India’s bowling efforts, compensating for Bumrah’s absence.
“There is a load when you are the one main pacer, and the other is an all-rounder. You have to pick wickets and lead from the front,” Shami stated.
India has already entered the finals of the Champions Trophy 2025 after a four wicket win against Australia in semi finals.
India will play their summit clash against the winner of the second semi finals played between South Africa and New Zealand on March 09 at Dubai International Stadium.
