RCB becomes Fourth team to Qualify for Playoffs; Secures 27-win Thriller Victory Against Chennai

RCB emerged victorious in the battle for the last spot in the playoffs during the IPL 2024 against Chennai Super Kings on May 18 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite two teams having finished at 14 points, Royal Challenger Bengaluru secured the spot in the playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a berth in the playoffs with a better run rate of +0.459. They joined Kolkata, Rajasthan, and Hyderabad in the playoffs.

Bengaluru secured their straight sixth win for RCB after setting up a target of 219 runs for Chennai and restricted the five-time champions to 191 runs. Yash Dhayal’s final over helped the side secure a 27-run difference victory in the match.

Coming to the match, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and opted to bowl. Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis opened the innings where they made a partnership score of 78 runs for the first wicket.

Kohli smashed 47 runs on 29 deliveries before being sent out by Santner while du Plessis smashed 54 runs on 39 deliveries before being dismissed on a runout.

After Kohli’s dismissal, Rajat Patidar scored 41 runs on 23 deliveries before walking to the dugout. After Tushar Deshpande dismissed Dinesh Karthik for 14 runs, Cameron and Maxwell’s 38* and 16 runs, Royal Challengers Bengaluru scored 218 runs in 20 overs.

In the pursuit of chasing the 219 target, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra opened the innings where Rachin Ravindra scored 61 runs before being dismissed on a run out.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was sent out on a golden duck by Maxwell on the first ball of the over. With Daryl Mitchell sent out for 4 runs by Yash Dhayal, Rahane scored 33 runs before walking out to the dugout.

Ravindra Jadeja smashed 42 runs on 22 deliveries while Santner was sent out for 3 runs by Mohammed Siraj. With MS Dhoni’s cameo performance, CSK was set to move forward toward qualifying for playoffs.

But MS Dhoni‘s dismissal on the second ball of the final over, Chennai Super Kings scored 191 runs in 20 overs. Finally, CSK suffered a defeat in the match by a 27-run difference.
