Ireland left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after an independent assessment confirmed her bowling actions were found to be illegal.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Thursday that Aimee, 18, was reported by match officials for a suspect bowling action during the first ODI against India at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 10, where she picked 3/57 in her eight overs.

She subsequently underwent a bowling assessment at the ICC Accredited testing centre in Loughborough, United Kingdom, on 21 January, where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension in her bowling action exceeds the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.

“As a result, in accordance with clause 6.1 of the regulations, Aimee is immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket. Her suspension will remain in effect until she undergoes a re-assessment of her bowling action which confirms that she can bowl with a legal action,” an ICC release said.

Initially, Aimee Maguire was named in Ireland’s squad for the recent Women’s U19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia. As the assessment window fell in the middle of the tournament, she had to be withdrawn.

Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland Graeme West said “The staff and players are rallying around Aimee, reassuring her that she will return with a stronger action and will continue to shine on the international stage for many years to come.

The experience and expertise that we possess within our high-performance coaching and support services at Cricket Ireland, will provide Aimee with the care, support and guidance to deliver the remedial programme”.

Maguire made her international debut in 2023. So far, she has featured in 11 ODIs and nine T20Is for Ireland and took 25 wickets in all with a best of 5 for 19 against England in an ODI last year.
