Jasprit Bumrah Breaches ICC Code of Conduct

Following his offensive bump against Ollie Pope, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test on England’s tour of India 2024.

India lost the first test with a 28-run loss at Hyderabad Stadium. The incident happened in the 81st over of England’s second innings when Bumrah deliberately stepped away in the way of Ollie Pope when the batter tried to take a single, leading to inappropriate physical contact.

Bumrah who picked six wickets in the Hyderabad Test match, was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and Player support personnel, which contains, “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”

The fast bowler was not fined by the ICC as it was his first offense in 24 months, but one demerit has been issued to him.

The charge was leveled by on-field umpire Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

The minimum penalty for breaching the code of conduct will be an official reprimand and the maximum is 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points.

Bumrah’s offense required no hearing as the player pleaded guilty to the offense and has accepted the sanction levied upon him by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

India will be looking for a victory in the second Test after suffering a defeat in the first Test.

India and England will be playing their second Test starting on February 02 at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.
