    Obstructing the Field Dismissals in IPL History: In Cricket, obstructing the field is a method of dismissing a batsman when the player wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.

    On August 16, 1951, England’s Leonard Hutton became the first player to be dismissed under the “Obstructing the Field” rule while Pakistan’s Rameez Raja(20 November 1987) became the first to be dismissed under the same rule in the ODI format of the game.

    On May 15, 2013, India’s India’s Yusuf Pathan became the first batsman in the Twenty20 history to be ruled out for obstructing the field. BCCI also follows the same “obstructing a field” in their Indian Premier League(IPL) tournament.

    Obstructing the Field Dismissals in IPL History

    In IPL history, Yusuf Pathan becomes the first player to be dismissed for Obstructing the Field while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) in the IPL 2013 season. So far three players have been dismissed in IPL history for interrupting the ball.

    Moreover in IPL history, so far no foreign players have been ruled out for obstructing the field while batting.

    After managing to negotiate a yorker from Wayne Parnell, Pathan attempted a single. As Pathan ran, the bowler tried to get close to the ball but Pathan pushed the ball with his foot, causing obstruction in the field.

    After referring to the third umpire he was declared OUT for obstructing the field while batting. following his dismissal in the 18th over, KKR were left out with an option for a batter who can score 23 runs in remaining 13 balls. Pune restricted KKR for 163 for seven wickets and win the game by 7 runs.

    During the IPL 2019 season, Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra was given out for obstructing the field while running between the wickets after blocking Khaleel Ahmed’s stump view.

    This incident happened during Delhi’s 162-run chase game in the crucial Eliminator game of the season. While Delhi Capitals were in need of 2 from the final 3 balls, Amit Mishra made an attempt to run between the wickets. During the process, Mishra blocked Khaleel’s attempt of throwing the ball towards the stumps at the non-striker end.

    After reviewing, the third umpire dismissed Amit Mishra for blocking the ball intentionally. Moreover, Delhi won the tense game by two wickets as Keemo Paul struck a boundary of the final delivery.

    Ravindra Jadeja vs RR, Chennai, 2024

    Chennai Super Kings allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was given OUT for obstructing the field while running between the wickets during the CSK vs RR clash on Sunday.

    The incident took place during the 16th over of the second innings where CSK was assigned to chase the target of 142 runs.

    In the fifth delivery of the 16th over, Jadeja redirected the delivery to the third man and attempted to make a couple of runs by running between the wickets. Ruturaj Gaikwad on the other end accepted the mission and made a decent first run but avoided the second run while Jadeja on the other end was halfway down the pitch.

    The third man threw the ball to the wicketkeeper Sanju Samson who in turn threw the ball towards the non-striker end but Ravindra Jadeja who made a U-Turn obstructed the ball and prevented it from reaching the stumps.

    Following the umpire review, the third umpire confirmed that Jadeja was watching the ball, aware of where it was heading, and believed that he had obstructed the ball from hitting the stumps intentionally.
