Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip could be in threat as BCCI as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning to trim Gautam Gambhir’s support staff before the match test series against England in June.
According to reports, BCCI does not want to keep big support staff of the Men’s Cricket team. However, the decision will be finalised in a high-profile meeting in Guwahati on March 29 among BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
After Rahul Dravid left head coach role, head coach Gautam Gambhir became the first coach of team India to bring two assistant coaches and a bowling coach.
Breaking the full support staff, Ravi Shastri and Dravid’s tenure, India signed Ryen ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar assistant coaches. Meanwhile, Morne Morkel took over the bowling coach role from Paras Mhambrey.
India’s support staff includes Gambhir (head coach), Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), Ryan ten Doeschate (assistant coach) and T Dilip (fielding coach). In addition, it also includes training associates Raghavendra, Dayanand Garani, physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain, masseurs Arun Kanade, Chetan Kumar and Rajeev Kumar among others.
Added with a security and operations manager, computer analyst and a few logistical and media managers who have been with the team for over a decade since 2011.
With Kotak already there as the batting coach and Morkel taking over the responsibility of the bowlers, the board feels there is no need of another assistant coach and a fielding coach.
Dilip is the only surviving member of Dravid’s support staff. He has been part of the team for more than three years now. In his absence, ten Doeschate can take over the fielding coach’s responsibility.
India has made impressive performance in white-ball cricket, winning two ICC tournaments in a row. Meanwhile the red-ball cricket has been nosedived as they lost six out of nine test matches, winning just one.
