West Indies pacer Shamilia Connell collapsed on the field and had to be taken away to the hospital during Bangladesh’s unsuccessful run chase in their Women’s World Cup match on Friday.

After the victory, West Indies were moved to the 3rd position in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 points table.

The reason for the incident is not yet clear but Connell was able to get up and climb onto a waiting ambulance with her hands on her stomach.

It was after the fifth ball of the 47th over that Connell, 29, collapsed while fielding at midwicket. Her team-mates rushed to her even as the medical staff was by her side quickly.

After what looked like preliminary treatment, Connell managed to get up and get into the waiting ambulance on her own.

At that point, Bangladesh women were in need of 13 runs off 19 balls with a single wicket in hand. Play resumed not long after, and Taylor sealed a final-over win for her team by picking up the last wicket. With the wicket, West Indies won the match by four runs.

“Able and the medical personnel taking care of her, hopefully she will pull through. It was sad to see her go down,” said captain Stafanie Taylor at the presentation.

“But we need to look at the bright side, it was time for us to regroup, we came back and changed the momentum. In the end probably worked out.” Connell bowled three wicket-less overs, conceding 15 runs, in the match.

“Bit worrying seeing her going down like that. She is a fighter, not sure what is wrong with her but hopefully she is alright,” said Hayley Matthews, the Player of the Match.

West Indies women will play their next league match against Pakistan Women on March 21 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
