The Australia legend Ricky Ponting reckoned that Rohit Sharma had a sense of unfinished business in him, which might drive him to continue playing ODI cricket for India until the 2027 World Cup.
It is worth noting that the 37-year-old has ended rumours about his potential retirement from ODI cricket. While speaking on the ICC review, former cricketer Ricky Ponting addressed Rohit Sharma’s response to a reporter regarding his retirement from ODI cricket.
“I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed and say, ‘No, I’m still playing well enough. I love playing in this team. I love leading this team.’ And I think the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027).”
The Indian captain has announced his retirement from T20Is after the side’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
Ricky Ponting also thinks that Rohit wants to make up for India’s loss in 2023 ODI World Cup finals. They were the favourites but didn’t win under his captaincy.
“I think the fact that they (India) lost the last one and he was captain, that might be what he remembers. To try win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup. When you see him play like he did in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn’t say he’s done yet,” Ponting said.

Rohit has cleared rumours on his ODI retirement rumours saying that, “I am not going anywhere and there is no question of my retirement.”
“I want to clarify that I am not going anywhere, I am not retiring from this format,” said Rohit Sharma. The 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
