Legendary Bangladesh allrounder Mahmudullah announces his retirement from international cricket. His decision came days after Bangladesh’s dreadful Champions Trophy 2025 campaign where they failed to qualify for the knockout round.
Notably, Bangladesh who was placed in Group A alongside India, New Zealand and Pakistan failed to win a single game.
Mahmudullah had already retired from Tests and T20Is in 2021 and 2024 respectively. The 39-year-old played his last match for Bangladesh against New Zealand on February 24 in Rawalpindi as part of the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Earlier, Mahmudullah requested the board not to consider him for a central contract beyond February 2025.
“I have decided to retire from international cricket. I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & specially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in-laws specially my father in law & most importantly my brother Emdad Ullah who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor,” his post reads.
“And finally thanks to my wife & kids who have been my support system through thick & thin. I know Raeid will miss me in red & green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way but you say yes & move forward. PEACE……….. Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket,” the post concluded.
Mahmudullah’s retirement announcement came days after his fellow senior teammate Mushfiqur retired from ODIs.
Mahmudullah has represented Bangladesh in 50 Tests, 239 ODIs and 141 T20s and scored 2914, 5689 and 2443 runs respectively. Mahmudullah also secured 43, 82 and 41 wickets in Test, ODI and T20s respectively.
It is worth mentioning that Mahmudullah finishes as Bangladesh’s fourth-highest run-getter, behind Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, with 5689 runs at an average of 36.46, including four hundreds and 32 fifties.
