New Zealand’s performance in Champions Trophy: New Zealand – one of the most underrated Cricket teams has laid their hands on the Champions Trophy only one so far. In the 2000 Champions Trophy hosted by Kenya, New Zealand won the final by beating India by 4 wickets.
Since then, New Zealand hasn’t won any title so far. Their second best came in the 2009 Champions Trophy played in South Africa. New Zealand ended up as the runner-up of the tournament after losing the final to Australia by six wickets.
How New Zealand has Performed in the Champions Trophy Since 1998
Speaking of the Champions Trophy finals, New Zealand qualified for the finals two times(excluding 2025) so far. Despite being one of the most underrated teams, in this section, we will look at New Zealand’s performance in Champions Trophy since 1998.
1998 Champions Trophy
A total of nine teams have participated in the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy(officially known as Wills International Cup) where South Africa won the title by beating West Indies by 4 wickets in the final match.
The tournament followed a Knockout format. New Zealand qualified for the main tournament as a result of winning this preliminary match. But in the quarter-final, New Zealand was defeated by Sri Lanka and knocked out of the tournament and failed to enter the knockout round.
2000 Champions Trophy
The 2000 Champions Trophy also follows the Knockout format but instead of nine teams, this edition saw a total of 11 participants. New Zealand emerged as the winner of the tournament by beating India by 4 wickets to win their first ICC KnockOut Trophy, their first win at an ICC event.
New Zealand advanced to the semifinal by beating Zimbabwe by 64 runs in the quarter-finals while qualified for the FINAL by beating Pakistan by four wickets.
2002 Champions Trophy
The 2002 edition of the Champions Trophy saw a change in the playing format as ICC introduced a round-robin and knockout format in the Champions Trophy. A total of 16 matches were scheduled to be played between 12 participants.
New Zealand automatically qualified for the tournament and was placed in Pool 1 alongside Australia and Bangladesh. In Pool matches, New Zealand played two games and won one game and was eliminated from the tournament before the knockout round.
2004 Champions Trophy
In the 2004 Champions Trophy tournament, New Zealand was placed in Group A alongside Australia and the United States. With just one victory in the group stage, New Zealand failed to enter the knocked-out round of the tournament.
2006 Champions Trophy
In the 2006 Champions Trophy which was hosted by India, New Zealand qualified for the tournament after being positioned among the first six teams on the ICC ODI table. New Zealand was placed in Group B along side South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
With two victories out of three games, South Africa and New Zealand qualified for the knockout stage. New Zealand faced Australia in the semifinal 1 but lost the game by 34 runs and was eliminated from the tournament.
2009 Champions Trophy
In the 2009 Champions Trophy, a total of 15 matches were played among the eight participants. As hosts, Pakistan was replaced by South Africa and qualified for the competition automatically.
They were joined by the seven other highest-ranked teams in the ICC ODI Championship as of 1 August 2009 including New Zealand.
New Zealand was placed in Group B alongside England, Sri Lanka and South Africa. After ending up in the top position in the points table, New Zealand and England qualified for the knockout round.
New Zealand defeated Pakistan in the second semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2009 and faced Australia in the final. New Zealand lost the final against Australia by 6 wickets and ended up as runner-up of the tournament.
2013 Champions Trophy
In the 2013 Champions Trophy hosted by England and Wales, New Zealand failed to qualify for the knockout round. New Zealand was placed in Group A alongside England, Sri Lanka and Australia. With just one victory of three group matches, New Zealand failed to qualify for the knockout round.
2017 Champions Trophy
In the 2017 Champions Trophy also New Zealand failed to qualify for the knockout stage. New Zealand was placed in Group A alongside England, Bangladesh and Australia. New Zealand failed to register a single win in the tournament and was eliminated from the tournament.
2025 Champions Trophy
In the 2025 Champions Trophy, New Zealand executed an impressive performance and advanced to the knockout stage. In the group stage, New Zealand won two games out of three they played.
Their only defeat came against India played in Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. In the knockout round, New Zealand defeated South Africa by 50 runs in the second semifinal and qualified for the final.
