Mushfiqur Ruled Out for Sri Lanka Tests due to Thumb Fracture

The Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim has been ruled out for the test series of Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh 2024 due to a fractured thumb.

Mushfiqur Ruled Out for Sri Lanka Tests

Mushfiqur Rahim had pulled out of Sri Lanka tests after he sustained a thumb fracture during the third ODI on the home tour. He sustained an injury from Taskin Ahmed’s delivery on his right thumb during his wicketkeeping duties.

The team’s physio worked on his injury before he resumed the match and smashed an unbeaten 37 runs where the side won the match to clinch the series 2-1.

On this occasion, Bangladesh Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan stated that the player requires at least three weeks of rest to recover from the injury.

“After the match, Mushfiqur underwent an X-ray examination in Dhaka, which revealed an avulsion fracture on the MIP joint of his right thumb.”

“He is currently undergoing conservative management for his injury and is expected to be sidelined for around three to four weeks, consequently ruling him out of participation in the Test series against Sri Lanka,” Bayjedul said.

Mushfiqur’s injury is a setback for the Bangladesh batting line-up as he was in excellent form in the ongoing tour. He was Bangladesh’s second-highest scorer in the ODI series against Sri Lanka after Shanto.

He has also played 88 test matches and scored 5676 runs with an average of 38.09. The selectors are looking for a replacement for the player but they are concerned about the choices with proper experience.

Soumya Sarkar, Towhid Hridoy, and Tanzid Hasan are the players considered for replacement. The 37-year-old Naeem Islam will be also considered for the test squad. He has been in impressive form on the recently finished BCL 2023/24 where he emerged as the leading run-scorer and NCL 2023/24 second-highest run-scorer.

Mustafiqur Rahman who suffered severe cramps during the ODI series, has now travelled to India to play in IPL 2024 for CSK. Jaker Ali was hospitalized after colliding with a fellow team player during fielding. Recently Litton Das was added to the Bangladesh test squad to play in the first test against Sri Lanka.

Coming to the tour, Sri Lanka won the T20I series 2-1 and Bangladesh bounced back with a 2-1 win in the ODI series. Both sides will be facing each other in a test series once again.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be playing their first test match starting on March 22 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.
