The Australia stand-in captain, Mitchell Marsh, made an impressive knock to secure a 7-wicket victory against India, played on October 19 at Perth.
He remained unbeaten with 46 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series on the rain-affected game.
The rivalry between India and Australia has become fierce in recent days, with both sides trying to claim the top position in the hierarchy. On this occasion, the Men in Blue are set to play a white-ball series in India’s tour of Australia 2025, where the hosts showed dominance in the first match of the series.
After being invited to bat first, India lost three quick wickets, which included batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
With the dismissal of Shubman Gill, India lost the entire top order before the rain halted the game.
Due to persistent rain, the game was reduced to 26 overs each side with respect to the DLS method.
Resuming the game, India lost the wicket of Iyer for 11 runs. However, Axar Patel and KL Rahul did show some resistance, scoring 31 and 38 before being dismissed by Kuhnemann and Mitchell Owen.
With small contributions from Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy, India went on to score 136 runs for 9 wickets in 26 overs.
Australia win the 1st ODI by 7 wickets (DLS method). #TeamIndia will look to bounce back in the next match.

With a revised target of 131 runs, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head opened the innings, where Head was sent back for 8 runs.
Despite Axar Patel and Sundar bagging the wickets of Matthew Short and Josh Phillipe, Australia went on to march towards victory from a small partnership from Mitchell Marsh, along with Phillippe and Matt Renshaw.
Mitchell Marsh (46*) and Matt Renshaw (21*) went on to complete the innings in the 22nd over, securing a comfortable win for Australia.
Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match. Speaking at the post-match conference, “The weather played its part today. Big thanks to all the crowd that stuck around. I know these days can be really frustrating, but it’s nice to get a win. It’s always nice to win at home. I love playing for Australia.”
Speaking on the run chase, Marsh said, “It was swinging around a little bit. We knew that was going to be the case for both teams, so a little bit of a challenge to get through there. Proud of the way our young guys came out and took the game on and got us over.”
Mitchell Marsh also lauded Josh Phillipe for coming out at the right time, “Came out and made it look very easy, didn’t he? It’s fun to get young kids coming in. They’re not necessarily young kids, the young guys coming in.”
“You just want them to have fun and enjoy it. In one-day cricket, we don’t get to play in front of the big crowds all the time, so I said them to really enjoy it,” concluded Marsh.
The second game of the ODI series will be played on October 23 at Adelaide Oval.
