Axar Patel Biography: The 29-year-old cricketer used to live in a small bungalow in the village of Nadiad, 60 km from Ahmedabad. He never wanted to be a cricketer instead, he wanted to be a mechanical engineer. When he was 15 years old, his friend Dhiren Kansara noticed his talent in the sport and suggested him to play in the interschool tournament.

Axar Patel’s father Rajesh Patel pushed his son to pursue his career in cricket. He even enrolled Axar in a gym to make him strong enough to meet the physical demands of the game. But his mother never wanted him to play cricket as she was concerned that he would get injured.

His first name’s spelling was “Akshar” but his Principal mistakenly spelled it as “Axar Patel” on his school leaving certificate. Since then he has been using the name.

On 24, July 2022 Axar Patel became the hero of the Indian Cricket Team with the bat as he scored 64 runs off 35 balls to help the team chase down a big 312-run target against West Indies in the 2nd ODI on India’s tour of West Indies.

Axar Patel Family

Axar Patel Biography: His father Rajesh Patel had met with an accident that caused severe damage to the left side of the skull and suffered a brain hemorrhage. Although he is currently partially paralyzed, he has claimed that he has seen his son’s brilliant performance for India.

Despite his mother Pritiben Patel never wanting Axar to play cricket, she was stunned by his performance against England. “I just couldn’t stop crying. I was very happy for him. He has worked very hard to get to this level,” she said in an interview.

His sister Shivani Patel lives in Canada and had no interest in cricket until his brother made his debut. She is one of his biggest fans of her brother and said, “It’s like my dream-come-true watching him in whites after six years of hard work and his passion to keep learning and performing at all levels of white ball crickets, IPL, etc.,” in an article.

His elder brother Sanship Patel is an engineer and did his master’s at Gujarat University. Sanship revealed that Axar could never bowl fast because of his shin with a sickle which he played in the fields as a school kid.

He had a girlfriend named Meha Patel and their relationship lasted for almost a decade before entering the marriage life. They got engaged on January 20 and got married on January 26, 2022.

Domestic Career

Axar Patel Biography: He made his First Class debut during the match between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh on November 02-05, 2012 and contributed 16 runs for his side. However, the match resulted in a draw.

During his second first-class match against Delhi on November 13, he had a bowling figure of 6/55.

During the ACC Emerging Teams Cup Championship under-23 category, he was one of the significant players of the side where he whooped seven wickets, including a four-wicket haul against UAE in the semi-finals on August 23, 2013.

During the Ranji trophy 2013-2014, he was one of Gujarat’s more reliable players and completed the campaign with 369 runs at an average of 46.12 and 29 wickets at 23.58.

He was included in the India Red team roster for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy. He was included in the India C’s roster for the Deodhar Trophy in October 2019.

He made his List A match during the match between Maharashtra and Gujarat on February 22, 2012, where his side lost the match by 43 runs. During the match against South Africa A, he claimed four wickets and had six maiden overs in the match.

Axar made his debut in a T20 match during the match between Maharashtra and Gujarat on March 17, 2013, where he dismissed three wickets in four overs.

Axar Patel played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023 semi-finals for Gujarat on December 09, 2023, where the side suffered defeat at the hands of Bengal by 8 wickets. He scored 17 runs in the match.

IPL Career

  • Axar signed a contract with Mumbai Indians in 2013, but he did not play in the tournament.
  • In 2014, Kings Xl Punjab signed him and he went on to have a successful season with 17 wickets in 17 matches.
  • In the 2015 IPL season, he took 14 wickets and scored 206 runs while batting in low order with a strike rate of 118.39 for the same team.
  • He bagged four wickets in five deliveries during the IPL match against Gujarat for Punjab on May 01, 2016, where his side won the match by 23 runs. He amassed 111 runs throughout the season and dismissed 13 wickets in the season.
  • During the 2017 season, he played 14 matches where he amassed 227 runs and whooped 15 wickets with a striker rate of 140.12.
  • Punjab signed him for INR 12.50 Crores in the 2018 season. However, his performance was not impressive as he had some setbacks throughout the tournament. Out of 9 matches he batted, he scored only 80 runs and dismissed only three wickets for Kings Xl  Punjab.
  • During the IPL season 2019, he joined Delhi Capital for a price of INR 5 crore. He was the second most expensive player for the franchise. He had a decent run throughout the season bagging 10 wickets in 14 matches. He amassed only 110 runs during the season.
  • The IPL season 2020 was played between September 20 and November 10 in the United Arab Emirates due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His auction price was same as the last year. He bagged 9 wickets and amassed 117 runs with a strike rate of 137.64.
  • During IPL 2021, he was retained by Delhi Capital. On playing 12 matches in the season he bagged 15 wickets and amassed 40 runs in 6 innings he batted.
  • The franchise had increased the price of the player in the IPL auction 2022 for INR 9 crore. He played 13 matches but dismissed only 6 wickets and amassed 182 runs in 10 innings he batted. He had a strike rate of 151.67 during the season.
  • The IPL 2023 auction proved to be a great increase in the performance of the player as he was auctioned for INR 12 Crore by Delhi Franchise. He also amassed 283 runs in 13 innings he played and dismissed 11 wickets throughout the season.

International Career

Test Career

  • In January 2021 Axar Patel was named in India’s squad for the test series against England.
  • He made his Test debut during the 2nd match against England in February 13-16, 2021 where he dismissed two wickets in 20 overs in the first innings of the match. His first wicket was Joe Root in the Test career. He had his five-wicket haul during the second innings where the side won the match by 317 runs.
  • On the 3rd Test match on February 24-25, 2021, he whooped six wickets in the first innings of England in 22 overs he bowled. He was sent out on a duck during their innings. He had a five-wicket haul during the second innings of the 3rd Test and helped India to fold England for a low score. Finally, India won the match by 10 wickets.
  • In the 4th Test on March 04-06, 2021, he dismissed four wickets in the first innings and scored 43 runs through the bat. He had a five-wicket haul during the second innings and helped the side to win by an innings and 25 runs.
  • With a five-wicket haul, Axar Patel became the 9th Indian player to achieve this on Test debut and only the second left-arm spinner after Dilip Doshi to take a five-for in his debut Test. During that series, he dismissed 27 wickets at an average of 10.59 and finished the series as the second-highest wicket-taker.
  • He was named in the squad that played the New Zealand tour of India in 2021. On November 25, 2021, India played its first test match against New Zealand where he had a five-wicket haul during the first innings.
  • In the second test on December 03-06, 2021, He scored his maiden Test half-century against New Zealand in the first innings of India and dismissed two wickets. In the second innings, he had a four-wicket haul and scored 41 runs with his bat where India won the match by 372 runs.
  • Axar Patel was named in the test squad for the Australia tour of India 2023. On the first test match, Axar Patel bowled 10 overs for no wickets and scored 84 runs helping the side to win by an innings and 132 runs.
  • In the second test on February 17-19,2023, Axar Patel scored 74 runs on India’s first innings. He failed to pick wickets in both the innings.
  • In the 3rd Test match on March 01-03, 2023, Axar Patel scored 12 runs in the first innings but didn’t pick wickets in the match. Finally, Australia won the match by 9 wickets.
  • During the fourth Test match against Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium on 09-13 March 2023, he scored 79 runs on 113 deliveries and dismissed the wicket of Usman Khawaja in the first innings of the match. Finally, the match concluded with a draw.
  • He was included in the squad for England’s India tour in 2024 after he was not picked for India’s West Indies tour and India’s South Africa tour in 2023.
    • He bagged two wickets during the first Innings of the first Test match against England in 13 overs. He also scored 44 runs on 100 deliveries in the first innings.

ODI Career

  • On June 15, 2014, he made his ODI debut on the first match of the India tour of Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, where India won the match by seven wickets. He was part of India’s squad for the World Cup 2015.
  • On 25 July 2022, Patel scored his maiden ODI half-century against West Indies where he scored 64 runs on 35 balls and completed the match with a six. He scored 42 runs on 34 balls during the match against Sri Lanka in September 2023 at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
  • He was part of the ODI squad for India’s tour of South Africa in 2023.
    • He did not get a chance to bowl and bat in the first ODI match of the tour. During the second ODI match played on December 19 where Axar Patel failed to bag wickets, and scored only 7 runs before being sent out by Markram.

T20I Career

  • Patel was named in India’s squad for their T20I series against Ireland. He made his T20I debut during the 1st T20I match against India’s tour of Zimbabwe on 17 July 2015, where India won by 54 runs. Axar Patel dismissed 3 wickets for 17 runs in four overs.
  • In September 2021, Axar Patel was named in India’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. But on October 13, 2021, Shardul Thakur replaced him in the squad as selectors thought that the squad might as Hardik Pandya was not able to bowl in the tournament.
  • He was named in the squad for the New Zealand tour of India 2021. On November 17, 2021, India played their first T20I match where Axar Patel bowled four overs for 31 runs with no wickets. However, India won the match chasing the target of 165 runs by 5 wickets.
    • In the second T20I match on 19 November 2021, he dismissed a wicket of Chapman on the four overs he bowled. India won the match by chasing the target of 155 runs on the 18th over of their innings.
    • On November 21, 2021, Axar Patel was impressive as he whooped three wickets on the 3rd T20I helping the side to win the match by 73 runs.

    • On 12 August 2023, India won the 4th T20I match against West Indies where Axar Patel dismissed Romario Shepherd. He bowled four overs for 39 runs.
    • On 13, August 2023, India played the 5th T20I match on India’s tour of West Indies at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, where he scored 13 runs on 10 balls.
  • He was part of the India T20I squad which played a five-match T20I series against Australia on home tour. He amassed 33 runs with the bat and bagged six wickets during the series. India won the series with 4-1.
  • He was included in the T20I squad for Afghanistan’s India tour 2024 played in January.
    • He dismissed two batters in four overs he bowled during the first match but didn’t get a chance to bat. India won the match by 6 wickets.

Controversial Run Out in IND-PAK match

Axar Patel Biography: Axar Patel was ruled by run out during the T20 World Cup encounter between the rivals. During the 16th match of the Super 12 India face Pakistan on October 23, 2022. The delivery from Shadab Khan on the first ball of the seventh over dismissed Axar Patel on run out. Kohli was on the other side when he started running but later he eventually signaled Axar to turn around.

The ball ran into the hands of Babar Azam and kept a throw towards Rizwan when Axar arrived close to the center of the pitch. Axar was far outside from the crease when the stumps were struck. But according to the replay, it was unclear whether Rizwan hit the stumps with the ball or his gloves.

When it was decided to be Umpire’s call, He declared Axar to be out. It created displeasure among the fans.
