ICC has announced the August 2023 Men’s Player of the Month nominees which includes two players from Pakistan and a West Indies batter.
ICC Men’s Player of the Month August 2023 Nominees
The candidates selected as the nominees of the August 2023 Men’s Player of the Month are Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, and West Indies Nicholas Pooran.
Babar Azam (Pakistan)
The Pakistan Skipper Babar Azam will be looking to bag the award for the third time. The batter has been ranked in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player rankings with his Two fifties and a century.
He scored two consecutive fifties in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. He had a partnership score of 118 with Imam-ul-Haq in the second ODI match where he scored 53 runs in the chase.
He picked up another 60 helping his team in reaching a score of 268/8. With the combinations of the Pakistan bowlers, they secured a 59-run difference victory to sweep a 3-0 win. He was exceptional in the inaugural match of the Asia Cup scoring 151 runs against Nepal. He became the fastest player to score 19 ODI centuries.
Shadab Khan (Pakistan)
Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan has made his contributions to make it to the ICC Men’s Player of the Month August 2023 Nominees.
His 39 runs on 50 deliveries in the opener match of the ODI series against Afghanistan last month, helped Pakistan to reach a score of 201. He earned player of the match in the second ODI scoring 48 runs on 35 balls.
His dismissal of three wickets from Riaz Hassan, Hasmatullah Shahidi, and Shahidullah shattered the batting line-up and sealed victory for Pakistan. He demonstrated his bowling skills against Nepal dismissing 4 wickets for 27 runs in the first match of the Asia Cup 2023.
Nicholas Pooran (West Indies)
Nicholas Pooran had been the part of West Indies victory where they ended the victory drought against India on the T20I series.
In the first T20I match, he scored 34 runs on 41 deliveries helping West Indies to reach 149/6. Pooran faced setbacks in the third and fourth T20Is scoring 20 and 1 runs respectively.
In the final match, he scored 47 runs on 35 deliveries where they had a chasing of 166 runs resulting in victory of the series decider.
He scored a total of 176 runs with a strike rate of 141.93 and was named Player of the Series after finishing as the highest run-scorer.
Player of the Month voting process
The Nominees from either category are shortlisted based on their performance by the last day of the month. The Candidates are shortlisted and voted by the ICC Voting Academy and fans around the World.
The ICC Voting Academy consists of well-known journalists, former players, and ICC Hall of Fame members. They submit their votes by email which becomes 90% of the voting members.
The fans who are registered with ICC can also vote via the ICC website through icc-cricket.com/awards, which gives the remaining 10 per cent. Winners will be announced every second Monday of the month.
