During the opener match of the WPL 2025, Gujarat Giants scored 39 runs in powerplay losing the wicket of Laura Wolvaardt.

Gujarat’s openers Beth Mooney and Wolvaardt made a solid start as they scored 35 runs for the first wicket. In the fifth over of the innings, Renuka Singh bowled out as Laura looked to slog across the line and got beaten on the inside edge.

The delivery crashed into the middle of the middle stump dismissing the South African cricketer. The 25-year-old was sent off for 6 runs which included a four.

Earlier in the toss, RCB won the toss and opted to bowl. While speaking at the toss Smriti Mandhana said, “It’s good to be back in Baroda. We were here a month back.”

“I thought it was going to be Gujarat’s home ground but looks like it is our home ground. We would like to bowl first. Dew is a big factor so it is better to a few overs out before dew comes in.”

“We had good practice sessions, preparation has been good. Few forced changes. Perry, Wareham, Danny and Kim are the four overseas players,” concluded Mandhana.

Meanwhile Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardener said, “We were going to bowl as well but that’s okay. We have built a good rapport with the Gujarat girls. We have got youth and experience in our team. Excited to get started. Five debutants.”
