Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to appear for an interview for the position of the Indian head coach of the Indian Cricket team on June 18.

The Cricket Advisory Committee will take on his interview. According to reports, another candidate will also be interviewed for the role of selector. The interview will start at 12 PM IST.

After the interview, the CAC will give their recommendations to the board. The Official announcement will be released by BCCI later. “We are conducting an interview session for candidates for the post of head coach and selector. The CAC will submit its recommendation to the BCCI and the board will make an official announcement thereafter,” a BCCI source confirmed.

Rahul Dravid has been the head coach of the men’s cricket team for three years. With his tenure set to end, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is looking for a successor and Gambhir is the frontrunner to replace him. Dravid has confirmed that he will not stay as the head coach after the end of his current tenure. The BCCI had invited applications for the position with a deadline of May 27, 2024.

Gautam Gambhir has been the KKR’s mentor in IPL 2024 where the franchise won their third IPL title. On this occasion, Indian legendary spinner Anil Kumble who worked as India’s head coach has said that Gambhir needs some time to settle down.

“You will have to give him (Gambhir) time. He certainly is capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams, he has been a captain for India, for his franchise. He has all the credentials to be that. But, Indian team coaching is slightly different. So you will have to give him time to settle in,” said Anil Kumble.

Like every coach, Gautam Gambhir will be given the option of choosing the support staff and the Indian cricket team will travel to Zimbabwe with an entirely new set of support staff members as current coaching staff, Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip contracts also ends by the end of World Cup.

As far as Dravid is concerned, he will be looking forward to complete his tenure with India with a title in the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blues have already qualified for Super 8s by finishing at the top in the Group A points table.

India will be playing their first match of the Super 8s round Afghanistan on June 20 at Kensington Oval, Barbados.
