All-rounder Axar Patel believes that his promotion in the batting line-up has improved his batting confidence which allows him to play freely.
Previously, he felt that his lower-order role was limiting his ability to contribute effectively with the bat. His recent performance against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025, has made him a valuable player in India’s white-ball setup.
Axar Patel played a crucial knock, scoring 42 runs off 61 deliveries at no. 5 after India’s top order collapsed. His partnership with Shreyas Iyer proved to be a key role in Men in Blues’ 44-run victory in the final group stage match.
Speaking to the media, Axar Patel highlighted his promotion in the batting line-up which boosted his confidence, adapting to the team’s needs rather than playing under pressure in the lower order.
“When I get an opportunity, I try to bat based on the situation. But now, the approach has changed. Earlier, I used to come down and had to make runs quickly. Now, I know that there are more batsmen behind me, so I can play accordingly,” Axar said.
“I know that I have a lot of time. It depends on the requirements of the team as well, and if I feel that I have to attack the spinner, I play accordingly, like I had a partnership in this match (vs NZ), and we could have a good total,” he added.
Reflecting on his evolution as a batter, Axar pointed out that his sensation knock 64 runs off 35 deliveries against West Indies in 2022 boosted his confidence at the crease.
“After that match against the West Indies, I knew I could finish games. As soon as I gained that self-belief, I didn’t think much about whether I wanted to show batting to anyone or not.”
“I know that I have it and if I give my 100 per cent, I can be confident of doing well continuously,” he added.
With India set to clash against Australia in Dubai on March 04, Axar Patel is anticipated to play a huge role in the clash. With Dubai’s pitches favouring spin, his ability to spin will make him a key asset in the team during the tournament.
