Despite winning the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian Cricket Team did not receive the tournament trophy as they refused to accept the trophy from the ACC chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
The trophy remains locked in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) office in Dubai, following the controversy at the celebrations.
The ACC office, located within the ICC Academy complex in Dubai and staffed by two employees, currently holds the trophy under strict instructions from Naqvi that it cannot be moved without his authorisation.
A resolution to this situation was discussed during the ACC Annual General meeting on September 30.
The first test playing nations under the ACC – India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are scheduled to meet in early November to address this unresolved matter.
The upcoming meeting is set to coincide with the ICC’s quarterly gathering in Dubai from November 04 to 07.
However, there are concerns about Naqvi’s attendance at this meeting, as he previously abstained from the ICC Annual Conference in July.
With ACC members believe Naqvi might send a representative instead of attending personally, which could prolong the deadlock.
If this occurs, the trophy may remain in the ACC office indefinitely unless the ACC members reach a consensus.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) maintains a position to address this situation. When contacted about this matter, BCCI officials indicated they would determine their course of action as the meeting approaches.
The entire Asia Cup dramas were overshadowed by Indo-Pak tensions. Indian players refused to shake hands with their rivals Pakistan througout the tournament, while players from both sides engaged in politically charged gestures.
The core issue originates from Mohsin Naqvi‘s insistence that the Indian team must accept the trophy from him personally, a condition that led to the current situation.
The standoff has created an unpredecented situation in international cricket where a tournament winner has not received the trophy.
