Despite the Pakistan Cricket Board announcing the 15-member squad for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, chairman Mohsin Naqvi has cast uncertainty over the team’s participation in the tournament.
The entire cricket fraternity has set eyes on the Pakistan Cricket which considering the potential boycott of the marquee event in the ICC event.
Prompted by Scotland named as the replaced for Bangladesh after being pulled out of the tournament following their refusal to trave to India, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi held a meeting with country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday.
However, the decision on the subject has been postponed to the end of the week. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has said that the final decision of the team’s participation in the T20 World Cup depends on the government’s approval.
With the final decision on the matter publicly revealed within next seven days, there are several factors to be considered on Pakistan’s decision to pull out of the World Cup.
ICC Sanctions
The full member nations of the International Cricket Council Signs a tournament participation agreement (TPA) long before a mega-event begins. Pakistan will be breaching the contract which impose severe sanctions.
Pakistan’s annual revenue share from ICC is estimated upto USD 34.5 million. Losing nearly 6% of the ICC’s total revenue pool could push the PCB toward financial ruin that it would not be able to recover form.
Boycotting the ICC tournament based on government advice, the ICC might view it as an attempt to ‘weaponise’ sport which could have severe sanctions like
- Suspension from global cricket
- Continental tournament exclusion
- Loss of hosting ICC rights

Impact on Pakistan Super League (PSL) – Non Objective Certificate Crisis
The Pakistan’s premier domestic league (Pakistan Super League) success entirely depend upon the participation of the overseas stars. If Pakistan boycott the ICC event, other member boards could retaliate by refusing No Objection Certificates for their players to participate in the PSL, on the instruction of the global body.
Fallout of Bilateral Tours
The Cricket economy is built by bilateral tour. By boycotting World Cup, the ICC’s primary source of revenue, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be risking the cut of their revenue from the bilateral tour.
Who Will Replace Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2026 if they pull out?
If Pakistan decides to pull out of the T20 World Cup, then the next highest-ranked nation in the Men’s T20I rankings – Uganda will be named as the replacement.
Placed in Group A, they will play their group stage games alongside India, Namibia, the Netherlands and the USA. Uganda played in the previous edition of the tournament, where they were eliminated in the group stages.
If playing, Uganda will make their second appearance in the marquee event and are yet to register their name in the T20 World Cup winners’ list.
However, If Pakistan decide to play, the tournament will go as per the plan. As per the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 schedule, Pakistan will play in the opener match against the Netherlands on February 07 at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.
