The former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina feels that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma‘s ODI experience remains crucial, as their vast experience can guide the next generation of players to eventually take up the leadership mantle.

With the duo having announced their T20I and Test retirements, there is uncertainty over their ODI future. Since retiring from test cricket earlier this year and guiding India to a Champions Trophy victory in March, neither Kohli nor Rohit has played an international match.

“Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important. It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,” said Suresh Raina.

“They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,” he added.

With the Asia Cup 2025 approaching in the T20I format, there is speculation that both senior stars could make their return to international cricket during the tour of Australia later this year, which includes three ODIs.

Suresh Raina also heaped his praise on Mohammed Siraj for his impressive performance in the recent test series against England.

The former India batter believes the Hyderabad pacer has earned his place across all formats.

“Siraj should be part of the Indian set-up in all three formats, given how he has performed for the country with both the white ball and red ball. He bowled 187 overs in the series and came through without any niggle,” said Suresh Raina.

Mohammed Siraj’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and maintain consistency across formats has made him one of India’s dependable bowlers.

His inclusion in all formats, Raina argues will give the team balance and depth in the pace attack.

As India looks to manage the transition between generations, the blend of experienced leaders like Rohit and Virat alongside rising stars such as Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj could be key to maintaining the team’s success in the years ahead.
