Washington Sundar Named as Deepak Chahar Replacement for South Africa ODI Series

All-rounder Washington Sundar has been named as the replacement player for the injured Deepak Chahar in India’s squad for the remainder of South Africa’s ODI series.

During the South Africa tour of India both teams are scheduled to play 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs where India won the T20I series by 2-1 while South Africa leads the ODI series by 0-1.

Deepak Chahar who has been benched in the first ODI match sustained a twisted ankle during a training session before the first ODI match and has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series.

Chahar had not played in the first ODI in Lucknow, which South Africa won by 9 runs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement on Saturday, stating that Chahar will report to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and will be monitored by the medical team there.

“Deepak has sustained a twisted ankle but it’s not too serious. However a few days of rest might be advisable,” a source privy to selection issues, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“So it will be team management’s call if they would like to risk Deepak as he is in T20 World Cup stand-by list. In any case, if there is requirement there, it would be a priority.”

Notably, Chahar is part of the standby list for the 2022 T20 World Cup, and the Indian team management will hope he is fit in time for the marquee event.

As of now, Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in the T20 World Cup squad is Mohammed Shami, who is slowly and surely getting match-fit and is expected to fly to Australia within the next three to four days.

“Mohammed Shami, if fit, was always going to be the first replacement as that’s the closest Indian team can get in terms of sheer quality. He will be joining some time next week,” the source added.

India will play their first match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 against Pakistan on October 23. While India under Dhawan will play their second ODI match of the series against South Africa on October 9 in JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.
