    Steve Smith Surges into Top 10 for Most Test Centuries Following MCG Heroics

    The Australian veteran Steven Smith smashed his 34th test century during the fourth test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy and entered into the top 10 in the elite list of most centuries.

    This was Smith’s 11 century against India, the most by any player and his scores of 140 have put Australia in the driver’s seat putting a score of 474 on day 02 of the Melbourne test. He was eventually dismissed by Akash Deep, falling to an inside edge which dragged into stumps.

    Smith has secured seventh on the list for most test centuries with Joe Root is the only current player ahead of him with a tally of 36. Only one Australia player has more Test centuries that Smith. Legendary Australian batter Ricky Ponting has 41 centuries to his name.

    He also become the the player with the most centuries against India. He reached the milestone in 43 innings while Root achieved 10 hundreds in 55.

    Steve Smith‘s (fifth) at MCG placed him ahead of Sir Allan Border, Bill Lawry, Ricky Ponting and Greg Chappell, who had 4 centuries each at the venue.

    Sachin Tendulkar tops the list of most test centuries with a count of 51. Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara stands next to him with 45, 41 and 38 respectively.

    Joe Root has equalled former Indian cricketer and coach Rahul Dravid’s tally of 36 while Pakistan’s Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene along with Steve Smith has a count of 34 test centuries.

    Coming to the match Australia scored 474 runs in their first innings. However, India scored only 165/5 with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease by the end of day 02 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
