Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out Of IPL 2023

Shreyas Iyer who was named in the Indian squad for the Australia 3-match ODI series was ruled out of the series before the 1st match. Iyer had to leave the Ahmedabad Test due to a recurrence of a back injury and will undergo surgery.

“Yes, he will have his back surgery abroad. He is likely to be out of action for at least five months with full rehabilitation,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

World Test Champions 2021-23 final game will be played between India and Australia in London from June 7. In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, KKR named Nitish Rana as their skipper for the tournament. Shreyas Iyer becomes the second IPL 2023 captain to be ruled out after Rishabh Pant owing to injury.

In a press conference, India skipper Rohit Sharma was also asked about Iyer’s injury where he had admitted that the scans ‘didn’t look good’.

BCCI has named Suryakumar Yadav as the replacement player for Shreyas Iyer at the number 4 spot. But Suryakumar Yadav has failed to prove his worth in the ODI format. Suryakumar failed to score runs in the first 2 ODIs and lost his wickets for a golden duck in back-to-back ODIs.

Though Suryakumar Yadav finds it difficult to replica his T20I form in ODI games, team management and skipper Rohit Sharma backs him with the focus of preparing him for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

“We don’t know about Iyer’s return at this time. There is a spot available and Surya has shown a lot of potential in white-ball cricket,” Rohit said in the presser.

“Have said many times before that guys with a potential need to be given a long run. Of course, he knows that he needs to do it better in the slightly longer formats of the game as well.

“Things are there in his mind as well. But like I said, guys with potential need to be given enough rope at that particular slot. Yes, he has got out in the last two games and in the previous series as well. But he needs to be given a consistent run. Like back-to-back games. So that he feels more comfortable.

“Right now he has got the chance because someone is injured or someone is not available. That is not ideal. After being given a consistent run, if you realize, runs are not coming or he is looking uncomfortable, then we’ll start thinking about it,” the Indian skipper added.

As per IPL 2023 schedule, the first match will be played between Chennai Super Kings and defending champions Gujarat Titans on March 31 in Ahmedabad.
