The South African spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba has been reprimanded for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 game against India Women on Thursday.
South Africa secured a three-wicket victory after chasing the 252-run target after solid knocks from Laura Wolvaardt, Nadine de Klerk and Chloe Tryon.
Mlaba went on to pick two wickets in 10 over spell conceding 46 runs at an economy for 4.60.
The left-arm spinner Mlaba has waved towards Harleen Deol after dismissing her in the 17th over of the match, with match officials deeming the act provocative.
“Mlaba was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match’,” an ICC media release stated.
Mlaba accepted the charge under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code, which deals with gestures or actions that could incite an aggressive reaction from a batter.
She has received one demerit point, her first offence in a 24-month period. Match referee Trudy Anderson imposed the sanction, with the charge levelled by umpires Jacquline Williams, Kim Cotton, Candace le Borde and Sue Redfern.
“In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Mlaba’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period,” the ICC said.
“Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” the ICC said.
Speaking of the match, India went on to score 251 runs after Richa Ghosh’s 94 run knock in the low order.
In reply, South Africa chased down the target reaching the target in 48.5 overs. The run chase was anchored by Laura Wolvaardt, Nadine de Klerk and Chloe Tryon’s knocks making a memorable win for Proteas Women.
