Shaheen Afridi who has been fined for making voluntary physical contact with Matthew Breetzke during the Tri-Nation ODI series opens up on the incident and claims he “Kept teasing Breetzke to get a wicket”.
The incident happened during the third ODI of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2025 played on February 12 at Karachi. During the 28th over of the first innings, Shaheen deliberately got in the way of batter Matthew Breetzke, who ran for a single.
Shaheen’s action caused inappropriate physical contact with Matthew, which led to a heated argument. Though Shaheen Afridi was fined 25 percent of his match fee, the incident received severe criticism from the cricket community. Finally, the Pakistan speedster reveals the reason behind the heated argument.
“For the first time, Matthew didn’t say anything. I kept teasing him to get a wicket. Whatever happened on the field stayed there. Matthew and I met, shook hands, and became good friends,” Shaheen said during an interview as quoted from Geo News.
Apart from Afridi, Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel and Kamran Ghulam also faced penalties for Aggressive celebrations during Pakistan’s win over South Africa.
In the aftermath of Shaheen’s action, he was fined 25 per cent of his match fee. He was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”
With a victory against South Africa, Pakistan qualified for the Final match at Karachi. Pakistan will face New Zealand to play the grand final of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2025 on February 14 in National Stadium, Karachi.
