After a 1-4 defeat in the T20I series of England tour of India 2025, the visitors have announced their playing 11 for the first ODI where Joe Root will be returning to the 50-over format after 13 months.
Root who was not named in the T20I side, is coming off representing Paarl Royals in the SA20 league in South Africa. Joe Root played his last ODI match in November 2023 during the ODI World Cup held in India.
Despite the defeat in head coach Brendon McCullum’s first white-ball assignment with with the side, captain Jos Buttler has insisted that England will continue to play ‘Bazball’ approach in 50-over format, taking a cue from Indian captain Rohit Sharma who lit up the last World Cup with his aggressive approach.

“We want to play in exactly the same way. We want to find ways to put pressure on the opposition with the back.”
“You’ve got to take wickets, I think it’s crucial you see how if you let guys bat for a period of time, they can go on to that. We’ll be desperate to try and find ways of taking wickets. It’s always about execution, really,” told Jos Buttler.
With Ben Duckett, and Phil Salt will open the batting, Root is slated to be back at his no. 3 spot with Captain Jos Buttler slotted behind Harry Brook at 5. Livingstone and Jacob Bethell will fill in all-rounders slots while Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Saqib Mahmood besides veteran spinner Adid Rashid.
