The star bowler Jason Behrendorff has joined Melbourne Renegades from Perth Perth Scorchers marking the first major signing under the league’s newly opened player transfer window.

The 34-year-old is reported to have signed a three-year deal with the Renegades, which would make him one of the team’s highest-paid players.

Renowned as one of the Competition’s most wicket-takers in the BBL 2024-25 season with 17 dismissals confirming his prowess on the field.

His transfer ends his tenure of more than 15 years with Western Australia, primarily with scorchers where he contributed significantly to their four championship victories.

“Moving to Melbourne has something my wife, Juvelle, and I have talked about as a goal whether the end of my career happened, so to continue my career and play cricket in a city we both love is truly a blessing,” said Jason Behendroff.

His excitement for the new chapter was evident emphasizing both personal fulfilment and professional ambition.

The Melbourne Renegades General manager, James Rosengarten expressed his enthusiasm for Behrendorff’s signing. “Jason is a world-class bowler and proven match-winner, so we’re delighted to have him on board,” Rosengarten remarked.

“His performances in BBL14 and over many seasons show why he’s one of the most dangerous bowlers in the competition.” This strategy signals the Renegades’ commitment to rebuilding after two consecutive seasons of missing playoff contention.

He had and successful stint with the Scorchers where he amasssed 137 wickets, placing fifth on the all-time list, Behrendorff was eager to explore opportunities elsewhere as the Scorchers grappled with roster changes, failing to confirm his contract for the upcoming season.

Missing the finals is believed to have driven the team’s management to reconsider their strategy and contraccts. His reputation has made 29 appearance for Australia and in T20 competitions including IPL.

Behrendorff arrives at the Renegades via the inaugural BBL player Movement window which opened on Tuesday and allows clubs to sign eligible free agents and trade uncontracted players.

Meanwhile the club has secured spin-bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar for another three years, with emerging speedster Mahli Beardman and all-rounder Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie on long-term deals.

The Melbounre Renegades add Behrendorff to the nine players in their squad who were already contracted and signed ahead of the contracting deadlines.

Contracted for BBL|15: Jason Behrendorff (contracted until BBL|17), Josh Brown (BBL|15), Harry Dixon (BBL|16), Jake Fraser-McGurk (BBL|17), Nathan Lyon (BBL|15), Fergus O’Neill (BBL|15), Tom Rogers (BBL|15), Tim Seifert (BBL|15), Will Sutherland (BBL|17), Adam Zampa (BBL|15)
