Jake McGurk, Matthew Short likely to name in Australia T20 World Cup squad as travelling reserves

Cricket Australia is set to include Jake McGurk and Matthew Short in their T20 World Cup 2024 squad as travelling reserve.

The Australian World Cup squad are set to fly to the Caribbean on Thursday for a training camp in Trinidad that will include two practice matches.

The 22-year-old McGurk has been in exceptional form for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2024. Though his team failed to qualify for the playoffs, his aggressive batting style threatened many experienced bowlers.

In 9 innings, McGurk scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 234.04 which includes four half-centuries.

But the right-handed batter who still waits to make his T20I debut has missed out on the 15-member provisional. On the other hand, Matthew Short who won the Player of the Tournament award in back-to-back BBL season has also set to be named along with McGurk.

“Australia’s chair of selectors George Bailey had suggested that Australia would carry just one reserve to the Caribbean when the provisional squad was announced, but they are likely to add a second with the in-form Fraser-McGurk set to be named alongside Short,” a report stated.

The T20 World Cup squad under Mitch Marsh will travel to Caribbean on Thursday for a training camp in Trinidad that will include two practice matches against Namibia and West Indies on May 28 and 30 respectively.

Players including Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc will join their national squad after completing their IPL 2024 duties.

Under ICC rules, only players named in the 15-man squad can compete in the warm-up fixtures.

“Marsh, Hazlewood, Inglis, Zampa and Agar have all trained in Brisbane over the past fortnight along with Short. Marsh is understood to have recovered from his hamstring injury but he is still yet to bowl,” the report added.

Australia will play their first match of the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 5 against Oman in Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
