Indian opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruled Out of SL T20I Series
BCCI announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series owing to an injury on his right wrist. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s squad for the remaining two T20Is.
The BCCI statement reads: India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Gaikwad, 25, had complained of pain in his right wrist joint before the first T20I in Lucknow.
He was later examined by the BCCI Medical Team and an MRI scan, followed by a specialist consultation deemed him unfit for the rest of the series. He will now head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for management of his injury.
The Selection Committee has drafted Mayank Agarwal for the final two T20Is in place of Gaikwad and the batter has already joined the squad in Dharamsala.
The second T20I will take place on Saturday, 26 February and the third T20I will be played on Sunday, 27 February.
Mayank has joined the team in Dharamsala. The Karnataka batter, who is set to lead Punjab Kings in the IPL is yet to make his T20I debut for India.
If it wasn’t for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s wrist injury, he could have opened with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma would have dropped himself down the order as he did against the West Indies.
Earlier, fast bowler Deepak Chahar and middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav have been ruled out from the T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Deepak sustained a right quadriceps injury during bowling, while Suryakumar Yadav suffered a hairline fracture during a fielding attempt in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata.
