Ebadot Hossain Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2024 Due to Injury

Bangladesh pace bowler Ebadot Hossain has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as he failed to make himself first for the grant event.

Ebadot sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury during an ODI series against Afghanistan. The injury forced him to undergo a left ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair surgery at Cromwell Hospital in London on August 30 last year(2023).

As the recovery period for such surgery spans around six weeks, the pacer missed out on the Asia Cup and ICC ODI World Cup 2023. following his unavailability for the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh included uncapped Tanzim Hasan as his replacement.

Post the completion of the rehabilitation session at the BCB’s academy, Hossain expressed his desire to play in the World Cup 2024.

“I am hopeful that I will return before the World Cup or else why I am working so hard? The way everything is going is good. The biggest thing is the way the medical team is supporting me and I am doing a very good rehab. I am regaining my strength. I am working on the sand field and working on strength. I am hopeful something good will happen in future,” Ebadot had told reporters on January 13 after he had completed a rehabilitation session at the BCB’s academy premises.

While Ebadot Hossain was expected to make his comeback in the T20 World Cup 2024, reports suggest that the pacer will also miss the global event scheduled to be played in the USA and West Indies.

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s chief physician Debashish Chowdhury said that there is no way for the right-arm pacer to make a comeback before the T20 World Cup. “No way (Ebadot can make a comeback before the World T20). We are not even thinking about it,” Debashish told a media.

“It does not go (his comeback) in that time frame (before the World Cup). It takes eight to 12 months but at least you need 10 months. He was operated in December, so it will be at least October when he can make a comeback. He can make a comeback a bit earlier but certainly not in the World T20,” he said. However, Ebadot had undergone surgery in August last year.

On the other hand, Soumya Sarkar and Taijul Islam who have been off the field for a long period owing to different injuries are expected to be fit for the marquee event.

Soumya hurt his knee after he collided with an advertisement board during an ODI against Sri Lanka while Taijul injured his knee during the opening Test against Sri Lanka.

“Soumya sustained a ligament injury during the Sri Lanka series after he hit the billboard and we have spoken with the best knee surgeon in our country and planned to go for conservative management. It will take four to six weeks to do conservative management. Currently, he is doing rehabilitation and doing well and we are hopeful that he can manage it without an operation.

In that case, you have to give time. He has already passed four weeks and there are another two weeks to go but you can understand that there is a Zimbabwe series and the team needs to be declared. Right now he is working on regaining his strength,” said Debashish.

“Taijul got a knee injury as well but he played with that injury. He got injured in the first Test while fielding and now rehabilitation is very important and both Soumya and Taijul’s cases are quite similar.

“The time frame is quite close as both the injuries happened in between one week. They will take some time to recover and it is becoming difficult for us as we are running against time. I think both will be ok (before the Zimbabwe series) but we are not sure about the time frame they would require to get fully fit,” he added.

Bangladesh were placed under Group D along with South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Netherlands and will play their first match of the event against Sri Lanka on June 7 in Dallas.
