The former England opener and ICC match referee Chris Broad has stirred a debate over the recent concussion sub controversy surrounding India’s Harshit Rana in the fourth T20I against England in Pune.
The seamer Harshit Rana, has been brought in as a replacement for Shivam Dube after the latter was hit with the ball. Harshit Rana made a stunning performance picking three wickets at crucial times which helped the hosts to secure a 15-run victory in the England tour of India 2025.
But it has created a controversy as several former cricketers have slammed this action saying it was not a like-for-like replacement.
Chris Broad has taken the matter to X, voicing his concerns on the issues. “Independent match officials were brought in to stop situations like this! Why are the ICC returning to the ‘bad old days’ of bias and corruption?.”
Earlier, the former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has also discussed the controversy row and called the substitution ‘quite the topic everywhere’ and reiterating that it wasn’t a ‘like for like’ replacement..
“The match referee should just hold his hand up and say he got that one wrong. End of event for good and we move on to another great clash this evening.”
Meanwhile, Brendon McCullum was visibly furious with the decision, expressing his anger in the England dressing room.
However, when asked about the incident, an England team spokesman played down the situation stating, “He (McCullum) was fine. (He) spoke to the match referee at the end of the game. We move on.”
