Mitch Hay’s stellar knock and Ben Sears’ Fifer has secured Blackcaps an 84-run victory in the second ODI match of the Pakistan tour of New Zealand 2025 to clinch an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
After being put to bat first, New Zealand struggled with 132/5 but Hay’s masterclass propelled them to a tall score of 292 on a spicy pitch that had enough in it for the pacers.
Mitch Hay was left stranded on 99 as New Zealand propelled close to 300 runs. Hay hit 22 runs in the final over, including two sixes and two fours as he chased a maiden ODI century.
In reply, Pakistan lost 32/5 in no time and from there, the result was a foregone conclusion. The fifties from Faheem Ashraf (73 runs off 80 deliveries) and concussion sub-Naseem Shah (51* runs off 44 deliveries) only managed to reduce the margin of defeat for the visitors.
Ben Sears picked his maiden Five wicket haul with a returns 5/59. Mohammad Rizwan won a good toss under overcast conditions on a grassy Seddon park surface but his new-ball bowlers were all over the place. The duo, who both scored their maiden ODI half centuries, put on a 60 run partnership for the 9th wicket before Pakistan were bundled out in 41.2 overs.

Rizwan and Babar Azam both failed to fire while Pakistan’s top order suffered a familiar collapse with the first 5 batters scoring in single digit.
“We didn’t do well as a batting group because the start of the batting we didn’t utilize the swing and New Zealand bowled very well,” Rizwan said.
“Later on Faheem and Naseem batted very well on a disappointing day for us.” Jacob Duffy and Sears reaped the rewards. Duffy took 3-35 and Sears snared a five-wicket haul on his ODI debut.
