The former Bangladesh Captain Aminul Islam Bulbul was elected as the new BCB president, replacing Faruque Ahmed. This comes after the national ministry asked Faruque Ahmed to step down from the role.

He was elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The BCB’s board meeting confirmed Bulbul’s appointment as a board director, clearing the way for his subsequent election as president.

Bulbul’s appointment comes after Faruque was appointed board director by the country’s sports ministry. Faruque Ahmed was appointed as a BCB director in August last year and elected president the same day, served a brief tenure of nine months and eight days.

A revered figure in Bangladesh cricket, Bulbul captained the national team during the 1999 World Cup, where Bangladesh defeated Scotland and stunned Pakistan.

His 145 against India in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test match in 2000 remains a landmark innings, the second-highest in a nation’s debut after Charles Bannerman’s 165 for Australia in the first official Test match.

After retirement, he moved to Australia and worked with ICC. However, his term with the cricket’s global body ends in June, clearing the way for his appointment as the BCB chief.

Speaking on his appointment, Aminul Islam Bulbul said, “My primary goal is to hold a transparent election and create the best cricket board. That’s it. I’m not interested in running in the next election. The government asked me, and I said yes. Now it’s just a matter of following the process.”

“I’ve always been involved in the development of cricket. As I’ve said before, I never had the opportunity to work in this capacity before. This is the first time I’ve received an official offer, and I didn’t say ‘no.’ Simple as that-that’s the first point,” the former batter added.

He explained his role and also taled about his future aspirations. “Secondly, since the opportunity has come, I will work. For now, my focus is on fulfilling my role until the elections.”

“Whether I’m assigned any tasks afterward, or I return to the ICC, I don’t know what the future holds. But as of now, I don’t plan to participate in the elections. I have no intention of staying in this role long term,” said Aminul Islam Bulbul.

“I don’t know anything officially yet about the exact role I’ll be offered. Since I’m not fully familiar with the board’s constitution, I think if I’m appointed as a counsellor by the National Sports Council (NSC) and they grant me directorship, then it will be up to the board directors to elect me as the BCB president,” Aminul concluded.
