“100 in five overs is illegal”, Wasim Akram on IPL 2024’s record high scores

Without any doubt, the ongoing Indian Premier League is one of the greatest seasons in the tournament’s history so far. A ton of records have been scattered while many have been scripted.

One of the notable records that was broken during this year’s IPL was scoring the Highest total in IPL history.

For 11 years, RCB’s 263 remained the highest score but in the ongoing IPL season, SRH broke the record three times and registered the highest team score in IPL history by scoring 287 against RCB.

SRH so far scored 287/3 (vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru), 277/3 (vs Mumbai Indians) and 266/7 (vs Delhi Capitals). Kolkata Knight Riders scored 272/7 (vs Delhi Capitals).

Notably, in their clash against Delhi Capitals, SRH scored a world record 125 in six overs with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma dealing only in boundaries. SRH breached the 100-run mark in just five overs and stunned the cricket community.

While Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram was asked about the high scores in IPL, the pacer made an interesting reply.

“Scoring 100 in five overs is illegal. Even if you bowl full toss, that can’t happen. You are paying the bowlers to get hit. I do feel for the bowlers in this format. But it is what it is. Bowlers have to think outside the box. Scoring 100 in five overs is unreal,” Wasim Akram said on a sports media.

“(Speaking about SRH) We all love Australians, the way they play. Who says fast bowler can lead well. It is a different matter, when Pakistan made a fast bowler a captain (Shaheen Afridi).

Then SRH have Travis Head, another dangerous player. Don’t in any league there is a more fearsome batting unit than SRH’s. Heinrich Klaasen is one of my favourite players in T20 cricket. He can hit sixes on any ball.

Abdul Samad is a great finisher. That is the reason why SRH is at No. 2. Pat Cummins’ captaincy has calmed the team.

“Scoring 270 plus is just too much. It’s like scoring 500 in a 50-over game. Thank God I am not bowling. It shows how cricket has changed. Boundaries are less but grounds are same for 30 years. Hitting, abtting have changed.”

Speaking on the tournament, IPL 2024 have crossed its midway where Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants have positioned at the top 4 spots of the IPL 2024 points table.

While Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans won 4 games each and placed at the next three spots respectively with a difference in their NRR.

5 times IPL title winners Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru were placed at the last three spots respectively.
