Who is the CSK Next Captain After Dhoni? – IPL 2024

Who is the CSK Next Captain After Dhoni: Chennai Super Kings one of the most beloved cricket teams of the IPL is set to enter into a difficult phase under the name of “captaincy change“.

CSK is one of the 8 teams to make their debut in the IPL’s first edition in 2008. The team is owned by India Cements Limited through the Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited holding company.

Who is the CSK Next Captain After Dhoni

The Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL Title five times and share the top position with Mumbai Indians who also won the titles 5 times so far.

It is worth mentioning that CSK has won all five trophies under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. CSK bagged MS Dhoni for USD 15,00,000 which converts to INR 6,01,80,000(USD was 40.12 against the INR on the IPL 2008 auction date of February 20, 2008).

MS Dhoni is the only captain to lead the team in more than 200 matches in Indian Premier League history. MS Dhoni was appointed as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and remains the captain of the team so far.

MS Dhoni also captained Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 during CSK’s ban for their involvement in the 2013 corruption scandal. During his overall captaincy stint, MS Dhoni led the team(CSK+RPS) in 226 matches and managed to win 133 matches which makes a winning percentage of 58.84.

Replacing such a legendary captain is almost impossible for the CSK but they need to take the decision of captaincy change once MS Dhoni decides to retire from IPL.

Ahead of IPL 2022, MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the CSK where the Chennai-based franchise named Ravindra Jadeja as the new captain of the team. Owing to his inconsistency, R Jadeja was stripped off from the role and MS Dhoni was renamed as the captain for the remaining season.

During his captaincy stint, Jadeja captained 8 games and managed to win only 2 out of them. In reality, CSK is on the hunt for Dhoni’s replacement in the near future. CSK will definitely opt to choose an Indian player as the next CSK captain.

In that case, Jadeja’s short captaincy stint will not lead CSK to look over him. But CSK’s INR 16.25 Crores purchase in the IPL 2023 auction really puts doubt over Jadeja’s possibility of becoming captain of the team.

During the IPL 2023 Auction, Chennai Super Kings roped England’s Ben Stokes for INR 16.25 crores which made him the third most expensive player of the auction event. Right after the purchase, many cricket experts stated that Ben Stokes would lead the team in the absence of MS Dhoni.

As per the IPL 2023 Schedule, Chennai Super Kings was scheduled to play their first match of the tournament against 2022 champions Gujarat Titans on March 31.

As expected MSD led the CSK in the 2023 season but THALA fans get heartbroken when they see their skipper struggling with a knee injury.

Right after the injury update many started to feel that it might be MS Dhoni’s last season. MS Dhoni made a strong point about his participation in the next season during the Qualifier 1 post-match presentation.

Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhoni said, “I don’t know, I have 8-9 months to decide. I have ample time to decide. Why take that headache now? The auction is in December. I will always come to CSK. I have been out of home since January, been practising since March, so we will see. I’ll always be there for CSK, where it’s playing or something outside.”

Here we will look at the possibilities of “Who is the CSK Next Captain After Dhoni”

    Ben Stokes

CSK Next Captain: England all-rounder Ben Stokes will be the number 1 contender for the CSK’s captaincy race. But the major drawdown is his struggle with injuries. During the 2021 IPL, Stokes suffered a finger injury which ruled him out from the entire season after playing in only one match. He pulled out of the 2022 edition as he wanted to focus on his country’s Test team.

Stokes played the first two games in the 2023 IPL and bowled just one over in those two games, against Lucknow Super Giants. Ben Stokes injured his toe during training ahead of the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 8 and has been sidelined ever since.

Speaking to CricketNext, former CSK star Suresh Raina, opined that Dhoni would definitely groom Stokes as a future captain, hinting that the latter might take over the role in the 2024 season.

“Surely, MS will groom Stokes. He is a world champion and did really very well in the T20 World Cup for the team. He also led his team to a Test series win in Pakistan. So, he is in a good frame of mind.

Also, his cricketing brain will be very useful for the youngsters at the Chennai camp. The Chennai crowd is going to love him. I just hope he enjoys and does a lot of ‘Whistle Podu’ for CSK,” he said.

Ben Stokes has played 45 IPL so far and scored 935 runs and bagged 28 wickets which include 2 half centuries and 2 centuries.

Apart from his IPL career, Ben Stokes has good captaincy skills. Stokes was named as England men’s Test captain after Joe Root’s resignation in April 2022. Notably, Ben Stokes won the Indian Premier League’s Most Valuable Player for the 2017 season.

    Ruturaj Gaikwad

CSK Next Captain: The young CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has already proved his worth by scoring crucial runs for the team. In the 2021 season, when CSK won their fourth IPL title Gaikwad bagged the orange cap by scoring the most runs in the tournament.

Before the Vijay Hazare Trophy season in 2021, Gaikwad was appointed as captain of the Maharashtra squad. Maharashtra has performed admirably since then. In domestic events, he has been an outstanding leader.

But a domestic performance cannot draw him the captaincy role in massive tournaments like IPL. His first five scores after becoming Maharashtra’s captain were 168, 21, 124, 154*, and 136. Gaikwad has been a run machine for CSK since he was given the opportunity to begin the innings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad so far played 52 IPL Matches and scored 1797 runs at a strike rate of 135.52 which includes 14 half-centuries and one century.

    Ravindra Jadeja

CSK Next Captain: CSK brought Ravindra Jadeja for USD 2 million in the IPL 2012 auction and became the most expensive player of the auction. Though Jadeja failed to impress in his chance, with guidance from MSD, Jadeja can become the best captain in future.

Ravindra Jadeja has played 226 matches and scored 2692 runs and bagged 152 wickets so far. Jadeja still needs to build his mindset to the captaincy role but it needs a lot of time and patience which CSK didn’t have.

Notably, no one can forget Jadeja’s performance in the IPL 2023 final which led CSK to lift their fifth title. Even MS Dhoni himself got emotional and even hugged and lifted Jadeja in joy.
