IPL 2022 Auction
IPL 2022 Auction

IPL 2022 mega Auction: Even before the conclusion of IPL 2021, the hype for the IPL 2022 begins once after BCCI confirms that it will include two additional teams in the season.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction

IPL 2022 mega Auction is one of the main reasons behind this hype. Teams were allowed to retain only 4 players ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. This makes way for other franchises to bid for the players who were earlier retained by their team.

The mega auction is a major boost for franchises that want to rebuild their squads. With two new teams likely to be added to IPL’s roster from 2022, the mega auction has become even more interesting.

New Teams in IPL 2022 Mega Auction

BCCI confirms that it will add 2 new teams for the upcoming IPL 2022. This move makes a total of 10 teams involving in the IPL 2022 tournament.

An office-bearer of the BCCI confirmed to Cricbuzz that the move is to correct the pan-India balance of the league.

Keeping the current distribution of teams and business opportunities in mind, the BCCI has put up six cities- Guwahati, Ranchi, Cuttack (all East), Ahmedabad (West), Lucknow (Central Zone), and Dharamsala (North)- for sale.

Update:

  • The auction for 2 new IPL teams is likely to be held on October 17th.
  • Sanjiv Goenka likely to buy the Lucknow team for IPL 2022.
  • Two new IPL teams will be announced on 25th October.
  • The IPL Media Rights tender for the cycle 2023-2027 will be released immediately after the appointment of two new IPL teams.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction Rules

According to a report, ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction, the franchises would be allowed to retain a maximum of four players each.

As per the conditions, the team management can either retain three Indian players and one overseas player or two Indian players and two overseas players.

New Purse Value for IPL 2022 Auction

The franchises would deduct the salaries of these four players before entering the auction. With two new teams, the BCCI will also increase the purse from 85 crores to 90 crores which means an additional 50 crores would be added to the budget of all ten franchises by the BCCI.

In case if a franchise retains three players, Rs 15 cr, Rs 11 cr, and Rs 7 cr would be the salary structure of those players, Rs 12.5 cr and Rs 8.5 cr if two players are retained; and Rs 12.5 cr if only one player is retained.

“Some players may like the idea of not wanting to be retained and will want to head into the auction pool. That’s because there’s an increase in the salary purse and two new teams are being added. So, there’ll be a rush to grab talent. Expect some leading Indian cricketers to forward their names for the auction,”  those tracking developments told.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction Date

The IPL 2022 Mega Auction will be held somewhere between December 2021 or January 2022. IPL 2022 is expected to play in its regular April-May window. In that case, hosting a mega auction in January 2022 is the only possible window for the team to settle.

Update: The mega auction for IPL 2022 is likely to be held in January.

IPL 2022 Team Captains

A captain plays a key role in the team’s success in every tough situation. As a captain, players have to keep the team intact on and off field which is the core for their success. Following are the expected captains for the IPL 2022 tournament.

Probable IPL 2022 Retention, Rules

Following the rules mentioned above for retention, teams are allowed to retain one in two ways:

  • Three Indian players along with one overseas player
  • Two Indian players with two overseas players

The above-mentioned format has not yet been approved by the BCCI in terms of players retention. Holding the best 4 players of the team will reduce the chance of accessing the star players for the new 2 teams that are yet to add to the IPL 2022 mega auction.

A report suggests that eight IPL franchises will be allowed to keep as many as three players to their core. If an IPL side has retained 3 players ahead of the auctions, they can use their RTM card to avail the services of two more players from the auction pool once again.

In previous mega auctions, the franchises were allowed to use the Right-to-match (RTM) card through which they were allowed to match the auction price of the players. The rule is applicable only during the Mega IPL auction when franchises can retain only 3 players ahead of the season.

The Right to Match Card (RTM) is a facility that allows the teams to avail the services of players who have previously played for the franchise from the auction pool.

So, if an IPL side has retained 3 players ahead of the auctions, they can use their RTM card to avail the services of two more players from the auction pool once again.

IPL 2022 New Rules and Format

The IPL 2022 format is not something unfamiliar to the IPL cricket community. The format has been used in 2011 IPL where the tournament is played with a total of 10 teams.

  • The ten teams are divided into two groups of five.
  • A random draw was used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.
  • In the group stage, each team plays 14 games facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times.
  • IPL Points Table system: The team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. The losing team will not receive any points. In case of a draw or no result, both teams will be awarded 1 point.
  • A four-game playoff stage following the Page playoff system is held after the group stage. Four games will be played in the playoffs:
      • Qualifier 1: between the teams ranked first and second in the group stage.
