CSK Playoff Chances 2024: How Chennai can still make it to the playoffs?

IPL 2024 CSK Playoff Chances: Yes, Chennai Super Kings can still qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs even if they lose their last league game against RCB on May 18.

Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings currently hold third spot in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points under their belt. With a requirement of a minimum of 16 points to qualify for the playoffs, CSK’s possibility of entering the knockouts hangs in the air.

With just only one match to play in the league stage, CSK were under pressure to win the game to advance to the IPL 2024 playoffs round.

If Chennai Super Kings beats Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 18, then CSK with a total point of 16 can qualify for the playoffs. But even though if Chennai Super Kings lost their final league game against RCB, they can still qualify for the playoffs if they maintain a high NRR.

As far as the run rate is concerned, CSK maintains a better NRR than the four of the five teams who are placed after Kolkata Knight Riders.

But on the other hand, SRH who stands next to CSK in the points table still have a couple of games to play against GT and PBKS.

If SRH wins those two games then they will surpass CSK’s 16 points and will finish with a total of 18 points. If SRH manages to register just one victory in the remaining two games, then they can still surpass CSK(if RCB defeats CSK on May 18).

In that case, if SRH moves to the third spot with a couple of victories, then CSK should beat RCB on May 18 or a defeat without a huge margin can still make CSK qualify for the playoffs with 14 points.

IPL 2024 CSK Playoff Qualification Scenario in simple terms:

  • CSK need to win the final league game against RCB on May 18 to qualify for the playoffs comfortably.
  • If CSK lost the game against RCB, they should not lose by a huge margin. RCB will surpass CSK’s run rate if they win by 18 runs or more on May 18 (assuming they score 200 batting first). If the target is 201, they’ll have to chase it down with roughly 11 balls remaining.
  • If SRH wins their remaining two games then they will end up scoring 18 points and will surpass CSK’s 14(if CSK lose to RCB) or 16(If CSK beats RCB) points which will require CSK not to lose by a huge margin against RCB on May 18.

Chennai Super Kings will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 18 in M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru to play their last league game of the IPL 2024.
