The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the extra time for IPL 2025 matches by one hour, and the games will have an extra waiting period of 120 minutes.

Previously, it is used to be one hour, and the BCCI had made changes in Playing conditions (Clause 13.7.3) that are coming into force with immediate effect.

“Previously, the Match Playing Conditions stipulated that for league matches, a period of 60 minutes of extra time was available to commence the match in the event of a delay. In playoff matches, this time was extended to 120 minutes.”

“In light of the current threat of rain and the revised schedule, the IPL Governing Council has decided that effective May 20, 2025, all IPL matches (including league matches) will have a period of 120 minutes of extra time to commence the match,” said BCCI in a statement.

The 20 over match can start as late as 5:30 PM (afternoon game) and 9:30 PM in (evening game). For a minimum five-overs game, the cut-off time for an afternoon match will be 7:56 PM (including 10-minute Changeover) and 11:56 PM for an evening game.

“As you are aware, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has commenced after a brief hiatus. Due to the hiatus, the IPL will conclude on June 3, 2025. With the early onset of the monsoon and the extended IPL period, several matches are at risk of being affected by rain. Consequently, the IPL governing council has made adjustments to the Match Playing Conditions,” added the statement.

“Accordingly, Clause 13.7.3 of the IPL Conditions stands suitably modified for IPL 2025 only.”

So far in IPL 2025, three matches have been abandoned due to rain, with teams sharing points, while two games have been shortened due to weather.

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata was the first game to be abandoned due to rain, followed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)-Delhi Capitals (DC) match in Hyderabad.

The first match that was scheduled after the week-long suspension of the tournament, between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and KKR, was then abandoned without a ball bowled in Bengaluru.

On the other hand, the RCB vs SRH clash has been shifted to Lucknow from Bengaluru due to rain threat.

Due to yellow alert by the meterogical department in Bengaluru that has predcited ‘heavey to very heavy rainfall’ in the city until Thursday.
