The left-arm wrist spinner Vitel Lawes has been named in the West Indies squad for the first three matches of the ODI series against New Zealand.
The 19-year old has been training with the senior side since the preparatory camp ahead of the home season and was one of the standout performers at this year’s ICC U-19 World Cup, finishing with 10 wickets.
Aiding his transition into international cricket, spin bowling coach Nikita Miller has been added to the team management.
The West Indies squad for the New Zealand ODI retains the majority of the squad against Sri Lanka, with a couple of changes. Shimron Hetmyer has been unavailable due to his commitments with MLC 2026, while all-rounder Shamar Springer has withdrawn from the selection following the passing of his mother.

Keemo Paul has been drafted in as a replacement for the all-rounder. Speaking on the upcoming ODI series, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has emphasised the importance of building up the team for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Every series we play from here on, leading up to the 50 Over World Cup, we view them as must-win scenarios. The matches against New Zealand provide the best opportunity for us to continue our improvement as an ODI unit while winning more matches for the people of the Caribbean,” said Daren Sammy.
Speaking on Vitel Lawes’ inclusion, “The inclusion of Vitel Lawes is strategic as we continue our long-term vision of exposing players who can complement the team in conditions that best suit their skill sets.”
The squad will assemble in Guyana on July 08 following the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka.
The ODI series begins on July 12, while the second and third matches will be played on 13 and 16 in Guyana, while 4th and 5th ODI will be played at Barbados.
