The batter Joe Root is set to be reappointed as England’s Test captain, with his role set to be extended until next summer’s home series against Australia.

However, there remains a question over the replacement of McCullum as Test coach. England is likely to appoint Marcus Trescothick to take over on an interim basis against Pakistan.
The ECB have faced a testing month since the chaotic end of their first test assignment of the summer against New Zealand. Ben Stokes retired during the third test of the series, where they lost 2-1, with the decision to sack Brendon McCullum as red-ball coach.
Joe Root led the side for the second test in the absence of Ben Stokes, who has been suspended for the late-night drinking session in Chelsea.
Joe Root has experience with test captaincy, leading the side in 64 tests before stepping down in 2022 following a difficult run of results.
Despite winning 27 matches as captain, his tenure is considered one of England’s toughest period including the defeats against Australia and the Caribbean.
The 35-year old has been the mainstay of the test side for the past four years. He broke the record of Sir Alastair Cook’s record to become the country’s highest test run-scorer while climbing into the top five on the all-time list of Test run-makers.
