The star batter Joe Root has praised England head coach Brendon McCullum for restructuring and unlocking his potential with bat across the formats.
One of the finest batters in cricket history, Root has embraced McCullu’s philosophy which has helped him to add new dimensions to his game.
Joe Root who has 12,972 runs in the test format, stands fifth on the all-time Test run scorers’ list and was already a well-respected figure before McCullum took charge of England’s Test side in 2022.
He believes McCullum’s assess player autonomy and instinctive play which transformed England dressing room, making the team more adaptable and resilient.
The start English batter hopes that this approach which has England’s test side, will seamlessly transition into white-ball cricket.

According to Root, McCullum’s influence has encouraged him to experiement with different techniques at the crease without fear of judgement.
“It’s about managing the situation to the best of your ability within your own game,” Root explained.
“McCullum is excellent at allowing players to do that. We’ve seen it bring the best out of several young players who previously weren’t performing to their potential. They’re thriving now, and I hope this continues into white-ball cricket.”
Root also reflected on how McCullum’s fresh perspective reinvigoraed his own game.
“At 31 or 32 when Baz arrived, it was refreshing to look at the game differently. Marrying that with my experience has been exciting.”
“It’s added a lot to how I manage different bowlers, whether it’s adjusting stance, creating angles, or being more proactive in staying ahead of the game.”
“Before, I was more technical, focusing on foot placement, shoulder alignment, and head positioning. Now, I think more about the game situation, which has been invaluable.”
Having played his last ODI matches in 2023 World Cup, Root is prepared to play a key role in integrating McCullum’s transformative test approach into England’s limited-overs strategy.
“Whether it’s assisting Jos Buttler or mentoring younger batters, I want to contribute as much as I can,” Root said.
