The IPL chairman and WPL committee Arun Dhumal has broken the silence on increasing the number of teams in the Women’s Premier League.

With the success of the WPL 2025 season, the Board had plans to increase the number of teams after three seasons but it now wants to consolidate.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal is pleased with the growth of the tournament and said, “To further strengthen this tournament for the time being, we want to consolidate before we take a call on further addition of any team. There are no immediate plans (to add teams),” said Arun Dhumal.

“So, within three editions, WPL has grown phenomenally in terms of traction, for in-stadium attendance. All the broadcast numbers are very, very encouraging. And it has given new impetus to women’s cricket worldwide.

“So, we are hoping this continues to grow. And this augurs very well for not only the tournament, but women’s cricket in general,” he added.

Women Premier League has not yet been played in home and away format yet, like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI combined smaller centres like Baroda and Lucknow with Mumbai and Bengaluru to host the latest edition that ended on March 15.

The BCCI mopped up INR 4670 crore from the sale of five teams representing Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, UP and Gujarat.

The media rights were sold for INR 951 crore, making it the second biggest women’s league in the world.

While the stadium saw a steady rise this season, the WPL’s broader remains talent development and evelvating women’s cricket in India.

Dhumal acknowledged the league’s untapped potential. “This argue very well for not only the tournament between women’s cricket in general.”

The supporters for the WPL in majority games was decent this season. Despite the main goal of the league is to promote Women’s games in India, the competition is yet to improve a lot at front.

Mumbai Indians has won their second title after defeating Delhi Capitals in the finals of the WPL 2025 season on March 15 at Mumbai.
