Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has opened on the rumours of the potential return of David Warner for the Champions Trophy 2025.
George Bailey Ends Speculations on Warner’s Return
David Warner announced his T20I retirement after Australia departed from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, indicating the end of his international career.
Previously, he announced his ODI and Test retirement earlier this year after the end of Pakistan’s tour of Australia 2023-24. After the end of the T20 World Cup, David Warner kept his door open for Champions Trophy 2025.
On this occasion, Men’s team selector George Bailey has confirmed that David Warner will not be considered for the selection for the Champions Trophy.
Warner was considered fully retired and appreciated him for his legacy as an all-format player. Despite his retirement, he hinted in a social media post that he would be available for selection.
“I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Aus in the Champions trophy if selected,” Warner said in the Instagram post, as he will continue to play franchise cricket.
“Our understanding is that David is retired, and [he] should be commended on what has been an incredible career across all three formats,” Bailey said. “Certainly, our planning is that he won’t be there in Pakistan,” said Bailey.
“You never know when Bull’s jokingâ€æthink he’s just stirring the pot a bit. He’s had a wonderful career, can’t celebrate it enough, and think as time goes by, his legacy of what he has done for Australia, and we reflect on that, the legend of a player is only going to continue to grow.”
“But as far as this team goes and the journey to transition to some different players, in his case across all three formats, it’s going to be exciting.”
Jake Fraser McGurk has been acknowledged as the successor of Warner after a match test series against Pakistan in January. Recently, CA announced Australia squad for a limited-over series for England and Scotland.
The Scotland tour will start on September 05 and the England tour will start three match T20I series on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl
