“Everything I have learnt is through television” : Jasprit Bumrah Reveals on His Unique Bowling Action

Leading ODI bowler Jasprit Bumrah in a freewheeling chat with Ian Bishop and Shaun Pollock discusses his unusual bowling action, his rapid rise in international cricket, and more.

Bumrah made his international debut in January 2016 and reached the 2nd place in ODI bowler’s ranking after Trent Boult in a very short period. His unconventional bowling action has been a subject of much discussion over the years but the 26-year-old has learned to block out the noise.

“I have never been coached a lot. I never did any kind of professional coaching or went to any professional camps. All my cricket till date has been self-taught,” he revealed in an exclusive interview for the ICC.

“Everything I have learnt is through television … maybe watching videos. So, I don’t know how this action developed. There’s no proper reasoning. But yeah, there’s always some people doubting that we should change this or not. But, I’ve never really listened to them quite a lot. I’ve kept on working on it and worked on developing my strengths.”

The star paceman has ensured to keep his game fresh and continues to improve certain aspects of his bowling that have kept him on the top of his game. His development of a lethal outswinger is one such example.

“For me, I always want to bring new things to my game because I think if you have a different action, nowadays with so much video footage, so much homework going around, people will find you out.

“I always want to keep on improving, keep on evolving, so I always had the outswinger but when I came into the international set-up, I was not very confident about it … so slowly, slowly you keep improving, keep on practising in the nets. I have been trying to work on it,” he added.

Bumrah also added that there is no particular cricketer, whose advice he follows but admitted that he is open to taking feedback from senior bowlers whenever he can, especially during the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“When I came into the side, there were a lot more senior players than there are today. When I came, there was Ashish Nehra. I also played with Zaheer Khan back then. MS was still around, Yuvraj was there. So now always whenever I have a chat with any senior bowler, maybe in the IPL or meeting them somewhere else, I just ask for general feedback that what do you think is going on. There is Shane Bond in the IPL as well. Just talking to them and asking if they are keeping an eye. Do they have any suggestions and see if they have any evaluations and see how that goes.”
