Devon Conway Ruled Out of IPL 2024; Richard Gleeson Named as Replacement

Chennai Super Kings’ opening batter Devon Conway who missed the early stages of the IPL 2024 after undergoing surgery on his left thumb has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2024 season.

Chennai Super Kings has named England pacer Richard Gleeson as the replacement player for the injured Devon Conway for the remainder of the IPL 2024 season.

Richard Gleeson has represented England in six T20Is and has taken nine wickets. In his debut T20I, he picked up a three-wicket haul against India which included the scalps of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.

The right-arm pacer has taken over 100 wickets in T20s, including a five-wicket haul. He has also taken 143 wickets in first-class cricket.

The 32-year-old Devon Conway injured his thumb during the 2nd match of the T20I series of Australia’s tour of New Zealand 2024 and missed the first test of the series.

He was ruled out of 3rd T20I and Tim Seifert was named as the replacement for the match. After reviewing medical reports, he was suggested for surgery. New Zealand Cricket has revealed that the batter has to rest for 8 weeks after the surgery.

So, he will be unavailable for most of the tournament, which is set to kickstart on March 22. CSK bought him during the IPL 2022 mega auction where he played seven matches during the season and played a full tournament in the 2023 season.

The player was retained by the franchise before the IPL 2024 auction. He amassed 924 runs in IPL career with a strike rate of 141.28.

With rumours regarding increasing in retention players count for the mega auction next year, Conway’s position in CSK remains doubtful.

Speaking on the IPL 2024, Chennai Super Kings perform excellently under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. With 4 victories in 6 matches, CSK placed in 3rd spot in the IPL 2024 points table with an NRR of +0.726.

CSK will play their next match of the season against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19 in Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.
