Jos Buttler who decided to step down as England’s white-ball captain ahead of their last 2025 Champions Trophy group match said “It’s an honour to captain England team”.

Right after the shocking defeat against Afghanistan on Wednesday, England was eliminated from the Champions Trophy 2025. Following the 8-run defeat in Lahore, Jos Buttler stepped down as England’s ODI captain.

Buttler has admitted that the decision was due to the side’s team’s early elimination in the Champions Trophy following back-to-back losses in Lahore. Apart from the early exit in CT 2025, England also suffered a 3-0 white-wash defeat against India under Jos Buttler in February this year.

Buttler has captained the side in 44 ODIs and 51 T20Is, winning 18 and 26 games respectively.

Winning this toss, England captain Jos Buttler said “We are gonna bat first today, looks like a decent wicket, a few cracks there. I felt like it was time, so I didn’t want to take more time to take that decision. It was an easy decision and I will do it for one last time, hopefully we can do well. A bit of sadness as well, it’s an honour to captain your country, it’s something you dream about. Saqib Mahmood comes in.”.

England (Playing XI): Philip Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith(w), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood
